Copper Price Surge Boosts Indian Metal Stocks: Hindustan Copper, Vedanta & More
Recent increases in copper prices, fueled by growing demand from key industries and a constrained supply environment, are expected to sustain a strong market for non-ferrous metal stocks in India. A report from Aditya Birla Capital highlights companies such as Hindustan Copper, Vedanta Aluminium, Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta Limited, and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) as poised to benefit from this trend.
The report emphasizes that the current commodity cycle differs from traditional demand-driven ones. It points to a mix of limited new mine development, rising strategic demand for copper and other metals, and a growing emphasis on securing supply chains globally. These factors are combining to create a prolonged deficit in copper availability, which is likely to keep prices elevated over the long term.
Copper is an essential metal used extensively in electrical wiring, construction, transportation, and emerging clean energy technologies. As countries push for green infrastructure and electric vehicle adoption, demand for copper is expected to grow steadily. At the same time, the development of new copper mines and expansion of existing facilities have faced delays, tightening supply. This supply-demand imbalance underpins the forecast for sustained high copper prices.
Aditya Birla Capital's analysis suggests that non-ferrous metal stocks with exposure to copper and other industrial metals are well positioned to capitalize on this cycle. Companies like Hindustan Copper (HCL), National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), Vedanta Aluminium Metal Limited (VAML), Hindustan Zinc (HZ), and Vedanta Limited (VEDL) have varying degrees of involvement in these metals and stand to gain from rising prices and strong earnings growth anticipated in the sector.
The global metals and mining industry has experienced significant expansion in recent years, and the brokerage firm believes the current cycle is still in its early phase. Indian firms are not only focusing on traditional base metals like copper and zinc but are also enhancing their capabilities in rare earth elements and other critical minerals, which are essential for modern technologies.
Looking at recent market performance, NALCO shares closed at ₹334.15 on the BSE, down 2.38% on October 1, 2024, with a market capitalization of ₹61,371.05 crore. Despite the recent dip, the stock has delivered impressive returns of 55% over one year, 49% over two years, and 243% over three years.
Hindustan Copper shares ended the day at ₹461.95, down 2.28%, holding a market cap of ₹44,671.67 crore. Over the past three years, the stock has gained 184%, with returns of 37% and 32% for the last one and two years respectively.
Vedanta Aluminium Metal Limited’s shares closed at ₹402.85, down 2.46%, showing a 10.87% decline over the last three months, reflecting some short-term market volatility.
Hindustan Zinc’s stock price was ₹556.85 at close, slipping 1.49%. The company has seen a 15.7% return in the past year, 7% in two years, and 80% over three years.
Vedanta Limited shares finished at ₹251.90, down 2.70%. The stock has delivered robust returns of 50% over one year, 35% over two years, and 214% over three years.
This surge in copper and related metal prices fits into a broader pattern of increased focus on resource security and supply chain resilience worldwide. As nations seek to build more sustainable and technologically advanced economies, metals like copper become central to these developments.
For investors, the outlook for Indian metal producers appears promising given their exposure to these essential commodities. With global supply constraints and rising demand, companies such as Hindustan Copper, Vedanta, and NALCO are likely to continue benefiting from favorable market conditions.
