Shyam Metalics Reports Strong Q2 Volumes, Plans Major Growth by 2031
Shyam Metalics and Energy demonstrated significant operational momentum in the September quarter (Q2FY27), reporting a 26 percent year-on-year increase in consolidated sales volume, reaching 1.5 million tonnes. This performance outpaces the 8 percent growth recorded in the previous quarter and signals a strong recovery in demand for the integrated metal producer’s products.
The month of September proved particularly robust, with volumes rising 32 percent compared to the same month last year. Revenue for the quarter climbed nearly 40 percent, surpassing ₹2,000 crore. The company attributes these gains to improved market conditions and enhanced production capabilities.
Adding to the positive outlook, Shyam Metalics announced a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to establish a 9 million tonne per annum integrated steel plant in Chandrapur. This ambitious project involves a capital investment of ₹50,000 crore and is expected to significantly expand the company’s production footprint.
Alongside volume gains, the company saw a roughly 7 percent increase in blended realizations during Q2. However, these benefits are partly tempered by rising costs for coking coal, a critical raw material in steel production. Despite this, the company’s revenue for the first half of the fiscal year has grown by 29 percent, exceeding its initial guidance of 20 percent growth for the full year.
Profitability also showed encouraging trends. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose 32 percent in Q1 to ₹765 crore, again surpassing the company’s own projections for FY27. This places Shyam Metalics on a promising trajectory as it focuses on medium-term profit expansion.
Central to the company’s growth strategy is an ongoing capital expenditure program totaling approximately ₹14,000 crore. So far, around ₹3,300 crore has been deployed toward expanding capacity across steel, intermediate products, and aluminum segments. By FY31, Shyam Metalics aims to boost its total production capacity to 14.6 million tonnes per annum from the current 9 million tonnes, positioning itself as a larger player in the metals sector.
Energy efficiency improvements also form a key part of the company’s plans. Captive renewable power generation is expected to help reduce energy expenses, thereby improving margins. Under its Vision 2031 roadmap, Shyam Metalics targets a return on equity increase of 600 to 700 basis points, moving from an estimated 10 percent in FY26 to a higher level over the next several years.
Industry analysts have highlighted Shyam Metalics’ ability to manage capital projects more efficiently than its peers. UBS Securities India noted that the company tends to complete capital expenditure initiatives at lower costs and within shorter timeframes, which supports higher returns on invested capital and accelerates growth.
UBS projects EBITDA per tonne to rise from ₹4,700 in FY26 to ₹8,400 by FY31. This expectation is accompanied by a shift in product mix, with the share of intermediate products declining from 33 percent to 12 percent, reflecting a strategic focus on higher value-added steel segments.
Market sentiment around Shyam Metalics has remained positive, with shares advancing 26 percent year-to-date. The stock currently trades at an enterprise value to EBITDA multiple of 10, based on Bloomberg consensus estimates for FY27. A buoyant steel market environment continues to support earnings, but the company’s ability to execute projects on schedule and gain market share will be crucial for sustaining growth momentum.
As Shyam Metalics expands capacity and integrates renewable power solutions, its strategic investments and operational discipline may help it capture more value in India’s competitive steel sector. The company’s medium-term outlook is supported by both internal efficiencies and external demand drivers, making it one to watch as it pursues its Vision 2031 goals.
