PL Wealth Recommends Midcap, Banking Funds; Cautious on IT Sector

PL Wealth's September 2026 Market Outlook highlights a preference for investing in flexi-cap, multi-cap, mid-cap, large-and-mid-cap, and banking and financial services mutual funds. The wealth management firm also sees potential in infrastructure and defence-themed funds. However, it advises caution on IT sector funds, citing concerns about artificial intelligence-driven disruption and slower revenue growth within that sector.

On the fixed income side, PL Wealth recommends investors focus on liquid, overnight, money market, low-duration, and short-duration debt funds. The firm's strategy emphasizes generating steady interest income rather than speculating on falling interest rates.

This guidance comes as India's economy continues to show strong domestic growth, but with rising inflationary pressures. Factors such as elevated crude oil prices, a deficient monsoon season, and the possible strengthening of El Niño conditions pose risks to food prices and corporate profit margins. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) could respond by raising policy rates by 25 to 50 basis points in the third or fourth quarter of fiscal year 2027, according to PL Wealth's analysis.

Despite these short-term challenges, the firm's long-term outlook on Indian equities remains optimistic, supported by domestic investment activity, earnings growth prospects, and favorable market valuations.

Preferred Fund Categories

Within equity mutual funds, PL Wealth takes an overweight position on five categories:

  • Flexi-cap and multi-cap funds: These funds provide broad exposure across different market capitalizations, with a focus on banking, capital goods, and metals sectors.
  • Large-and-mid-cap funds: Combining investments in established large companies and promising mid-sized firms offers a balanced growth opportunity.
  • Mid-cap funds: The firm highlights stronger earnings growth in mid-cap companies and the solid performance of the Nifty Midcap 150 index as reasons for this preference.
  • Banking and financial services funds: Expectations of continued bank credit growth, favorable liquidity conditions, and sector earnings growth support this stance.
  • Infrastructure and defence-themed funds: Opportunities arise from India's push for defence indigenisation, infrastructure development, power transmission, renewable energy, and data centres.

PL Wealth holds a neutral view on large-cap funds and suggests selective active management rather than passive index investing. It remains underweight on IT and technology sector funds due to concerns over AI-related disruption, margin pressures, and subdued revenue growth.

Nifty Market Outlook

PL Research projects a 12-month base-case target of 27,123 for the Nifty index, which implies roughly a 12 percent upside from its level of 24,208 as of August 26, 2026. This target is based on a price-to-earnings multiple of 17.6 times estimated earnings per share of ₹1,537 for fiscal year 2028. The report also provides a bull-case target of 30,137 and a bear-case target of 24,971 to outline possible market scenarios.

Notably, the Nifty at 24,208 was trading at a 17.3 times forward earnings multiple, which is an 11.7 percent discount to its 15-year average P/E ratio of 19.6 times. This valuation gap offers some support for medium- and long-term investment perspectives, though PL Wealth recommends staggered investments over aggressive lump sums in the near term.

Sector Preferences and Market Drivers

The firm's favored sectors align with expectations that domestic investment and infrastructure spending will continue to drive corporate earnings. Its model portfolio is overweight banks, capital goods, defence, diversified financials, metals, healthcare, telecom, and ports.

Banking and financial services are expected to benefit from robust credit growth and ample liquidity. As of July 31, 2026, non-food bank credit growth was 19.1 percent year-on-year. Capital goods and defence sectors gain strength from increased investment in infrastructure, power, renewables, data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, and defence production.

Conversely, PL Wealth takes a cautious stance on IT services, consumer companies, and automobile manufacturers. It notes potential disruption in IT due to artificial intelligence and slower revenue growth, while consumer and auto sectors may face margin pressures amid rising input costs and moderated growth.

Debt Fund Strategy

For fixed income investors, PL Wealth advises focusing on accrual strategies that generate returns primarily through interest income rather than duration plays that depend on bond price changes linked to interest rate moves. The preference is for short-maturity instruments between three months and three years.

The report mentions attractive yields around 7 to 7.5 percent on certificates of deposit and 7.3 to 7.8 percent on commercial papers. It favors liquid, overnight, money market, ultra-short-duration, and low-duration funds for investors seeking liquidity or short-term parking of funds.

Within debt funds, PL Wealth is overweight on overnight, liquid, money market, low-duration, short-duration, and banking and PSU debt funds, with a focus on high-quality AAA-rated or sovereign securities. It maintains a neutral view on corporate bond and medium-duration funds, preferring selective exposure to AA+ or better rated instruments. The firm is also neutral on gilt and long-duration funds, cautioning that aggressive long-duration bets may be premature given possible RBI rate hikes in the latter half of fiscal year 2027.

Inflation Risks and External Factors

Inflation remains a key concern. India's monsoon season ended with a 13 percent cumulative deficit as of August 26, 2026, and 16 to 17 meteorological subdivisions recorded deficient rainfall. Kharif crop sowing was down 2 percent, with rice and oilseeds notably affected. Skymet forecasts a 70 percent chance of a full-season drought and a 15 percent rainfall shortfall.

El Niño's potential strengthening could raise prices for agricultural commodities such as sugar, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and soybeans. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices averaged $90 to $93 per barrel in August 2026. The report estimates that every $10 increase in crude prices could add about 30 basis points to headline inflation.

Companies holding 45 to 60 days of imported raw material inventory bought at higher prices might face margin pressure in the second and third quarters of fiscal year 2027. Given these factors, PL Wealth highlights a 25 to 50 basis point risk of RBI rate hikes in the second half of fiscal year 2027.

Outlook on Gold and Silver

Gold is expected to stay within a $3,900 to $4,400 per ounce range in the near term. Central bank purchases should provide support, though US monetary policy shifts and geopolitical tensions may cause price volatility. Silver, trading around $58 to $59 per ounce in late July, benefits from demand in green technology industries and a physical supply deficit. However, a sustained rise in silver prices would likely require stronger inflows into silver exchange-traded funds.

Key Takeaways for Investors

PL Wealth’s September 2026 outlook encourages investors to adopt a phased approach to equity allocation, focusing on fund categories tied to banking, capital goods, infrastructure, defence, and mid-cap companies. In fixed income, the recommendation is to target short-duration strategies and high-quality debt instruments that deliver interest income while limiting exposure to interest rate volatility.

While the long-term confidence in the Indian equity market remains firm, investors should be mindful of inflationary risks, crude oil price fluctuations, and potential RBI policy changes that could influence market dynamics in the near term.
