India Aims to Surpass $1 Trillion in Exports This Year, Says CEA Nageswaran

India appears set to reach or even surpass the milestone of $1 trillion in exports during the current financial year, provided the existing pace of trade is maintained, Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran stated recently. Citing trade figures from the first half of the year, which stood at approximately $480 billion, Nageswaran expressed confidence in the country's export trajectory.

Speaking at the ISID-IDRA Fourth National Conference on October 29, 2026, the CEA highlighted that if the export momentum seen in the initial six months persists, India is well positioned to achieve this ambitious target by the end of the financial year. The $1 trillion export target represents a significant milestone, reflecting the nation's expanding role in global trade.

However, Nageswaran emphasized that this goal hinges on bolstering domestic manufacturing and enhancing the competitiveness of Indian industries. The global economic environment, marked by ongoing supply chain disruptions, has underscored the need for India to reduce reliance on international markets for essential goods. He urged policymakers and industry leaders to link government support with the capacity of sectors to compete on the international stage.

"Industries benefiting from government assistance must demonstrate export growth or the ability to match import prices," Nageswaran stated. He advocated for a reciprocal approach, where incentives are tied to measurable export outcomes or import substitution capabilities. The CEA warned against protective measures that do not accompany investments aimed at improving productivity, cautioning that such protectionism could ultimately weaken the resilience of Indian industries.

The presentation shared during his remarks proposed that government support should be time-bound and contingent upon performance indicators related to exports. Once domestic production reaches competitive levels, protectionist measures should be phased out to encourage continuous innovation and efficiency.

On the macroeconomic front, Nageswaran pointed to robust growth indicators for the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 7.8 percent, manufacturing gross value added (GVA) increased by 9.2 percent, and gross fixed capital formation rose by 11.9 percent. Despite these encouraging figures, the manufacturing sector's share of total GVA remained relatively steady, moving marginally from 14.7 percent in 2022-23 to 14.8 percent in 2025-26.

Another trend highlighted by the CEA was the faster growth in core merchandise imports, which surged 19.7 percent year-on-year during April to September 2026, outpacing the 16.2 percent growth rate of core exports in the same period. This divergence underscores the challenges posed by geopolitical tensions and supply chain uncertainties, factors that have heightened the importance of strengthening India's domestic manufacturing capabilities and securing essential resources.

Nageswaran also stressed the strategic necessity of building reserves of critical commodities and enhancing India's ability to supply global markets reliably. These measures aim to mitigate vulnerabilities exposed by recent global disruptions and geopolitical developments.

While the export outlook appears promising, the ultimate achievement of the $1 trillion benchmark will depend on sustaining the current export pace in the latter half of the fiscal year. The government and industry stakeholders will likely continue monitoring trade data closely to adjust policies and initiatives as needed to support this objective.

This development fits into a broader context where India is seeking to strengthen its position in international trade amid shifting global dynamics. The focus on export growth, manufacturing competitiveness, and supply chain resilience aligns with ongoing efforts to boost economic growth and achieve greater self-reliance.
