Uttar Pradesh Rooftop Solar Capacity Surpasses 3,000 MW with 900,000+ Installations
Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy efforts by reaching a rooftop solar capacity of 3,000 megawatts (MW). This achievement comes as a result of more than 900,000 rooftop solar installations across the state, reflecting rapid growth in solar adoption among residential and commercial users.
Officials from the state's alternative energy department highlighted that this expansion places Uttar Pradesh among the notable solar markets globally. To provide perspective, data from 2026 shows that Australia installed approximately 1.89 gigawatts (GW) of rooftop solar capacity in the first half of the year, averaging about 10.4 MW daily. Similarly, in the United States, residential solar additions averaged 13.1 MW per day during the first quarter and 10.9 MW per day in the second quarter. Germany’s building-mounted solar capacity grew by roughly 17.5 MW daily over the same period.
Against this international background, Uttar Pradesh's daily addition of 9 to 10 MW in rooftop solar capacity demonstrates the state’s strong commitment to expanding clean energy. This rate is comparable to Australia's average daily rooftop solar increase, underscoring Uttar Pradesh’s progress on a global scale.
The growth has been supported by government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides eligible beneficiaries with subsidies of up to ₹1.08 lakh. These subsidies, issued by both the central government and the Uttar Pradesh state government, help reduce the upfront costs of installing rooftop solar systems, making clean energy more accessible for households.
Ravinder Singh, director of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), noted that the solar sector’s expansion has also created employment opportunities. A network of over 9,500 vendors is directly involved in installation, equipment supply, transportation, maintenance, and related services, generating approximately 100,000 jobs.
With the installed rooftop solar capacity now at 3,000 MW, and an assumed average daily generation of 4.5 units per kilowatt, Uttar Pradesh’s rooftop solar systems have the potential to produce around 13.5 million units of clean electricity every day. This substantial output contributes to reducing the state’s reliance on conventional energy sources and supports the broader goal of sustainable development.
The growth in rooftop solar installations is also stimulating local industries related to solar energy. Manufacturers and suppliers of solar modules, inverters, batteries, cables, and mounting structures are experiencing increased demand. Additionally, local businesses specializing in installation and maintenance benefit from new commercial opportunities, further supporting the state’s economic development.
India’s renewable energy sector has been expanding rapidly, driven by government policies, falling equipment costs, and rising environmental awareness. Uttar Pradesh’s progress is a reflection of this national trend as states work to meet energy needs while addressing climate change challenges. The rooftop solar market, in particular, is seen as a vital component for decentralizing power generation and empowering consumers to produce their own clean electricity.
As rooftop solar capacity continues to grow, Uttar Pradesh is positioned to become a leading example of successful solar adoption in India, contributing to the country’s overall renewable energy targets and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
