TCS Acquires Best Buy India GCC to Build AI-Centric Innovation Hub

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced its acquisition of the global capability centre (GCC) of US consumer electronics retailer Best Buy located in India. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed. This strategic move aims to blend Best Buy’s retail and enterprise domain knowledge with TCS’s advanced technology, engineering strengths, and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Under a multi-year agreement, the Best Buy India entity will transition into TCS, ensuring uninterrupted business operations while undergoing a transformation into an AI-native centre. This development is set to enhance innovation and accelerate the deployment of AI-driven solutions within the retail space.

Krishnan Ramanujam, president of TCS’s consumer business group, highlighted the significance of the deal, saying, "Best Buy has built a strong technology organization with deep knowledge of its customers and business. By bringing that talent together with TCS’ retail expertise, AI, engineering and global execution capabilities, we will create an AI-native capability engine that aligns Best Buy’s priorities. This partnership will also create a repeatable value platform that can potentially benefit the broader retail industry."

The acquisition comes at a time when many global capability centres in India face challenges in scaling beyond certain maturity levels. These centres often encounter stagnation, which has led some companies to sell their operations to service providers. For service firms like TCS, acquiring GCCs offers an opportunity to expand their revenue base and technology footprint.

Ahrey Smith, vice-president of technology strategy and transformation at Best Buy, emphasized the importance of finding the right partner for the India team. "Our India team has played an important role in advancing Best Buy’s priorities, and we wanted a partner that understood both the business context and the value of this team. TCS brings that understanding, along with the technology and AI capabilities to build on the team’s strengths," he said.

The deal reflects a broader trend in the IT and retail sectors, where companies are increasingly focusing on integrating AI and next-generation technologies into their operations. Retailers are under pressure to innovate rapidly due to evolving consumer preferences and competitive dynamics. By combining Best Buy’s retail expertise with TCS’s technological resources, the new AI-native centre is positioned to develop scalable solutions that could influence the retail industry on a wider scale.

India has become a global hub for technology centres, with numerous multinational companies establishing GCCs to tap into local talent and cost efficiencies. However, the ability to evolve these centres into innovation powerhouses remains a challenge. TCS’s approach of converting the acquired Best Buy unit into an AI-focused centre aligns with the growing demand for digital transformation and AI adoption in retail services.

This move not only strengthens TCS’s position in the retail technology sector but also showcases how service providers are leveraging acquisitions to deepen their expertise and expand their delivery capabilities globally. The collaboration is expected to foster continuous innovation, improve operational efficiencies, and create new value propositions for clients.

The acquisition of Best Buy’s India GCC by TCS marks a significant step in the evolving landscape of IT services and retail technology, demonstrating how companies are adapting to the rising influence of AI and digital transformation across industries.
