Jefferies Sees 10% Upside in Kotak Mahindra Bank Shares After Anup Saha Appointment

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially sanctioned the appointment of Anup Kumar Saha as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kotak Mahindra Bank. His leadership will commence on January 1, 2027, with a term extending for three years. This change follows the current tenure of Ashok Vaswani, who assumed the role of MD and CEO on January 1, 2024, and will remain in charge until December 31, 2026.

Although Anup Saha's appointment has been announced well in advance, Ashok Vaswani will continue to steer the bank, which is among the top four private sector lenders in India, until the end of his current term. The stock market, however, often responds to such future leadership changes ahead of time. This anticipation was evident when Kotak Mahindra Bank's shares appreciated notably following the disclosure of Saha as Vaswani's successor.

Reviewing the performance of Kotak Mahindra Bank's shares under Ashok Vaswani, the stock was valued at ₹381.62 per share on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on December 29, 2023, the last trading day before Vaswani took charge. By the time of the announcement about Anup Saha on January 3, 2024, shares had risen to ₹417 on NSE, marking a return of approximately 9% during Vaswani's initial 21 months at the helm.

Despite this modest increase in share price, global brokerage firm Jefferies India remains optimistic about Kotak Mahindra Bank’s future prospects. The firm has rated the stock as a 'buy,' projecting a further upside potential of around 10% from current levels. Jefferies highlighted the RBI’s approval of Saha’s appointment as a positive development, emphasizing his extensive experience managing retail banking segments at both Bajaj Finance and ICICI Bank.

According to Jefferies’ research, any strategic restructuring under Saha’s stewardship could stimulate growth in retail deposits and net interest income (NII), while operational efficiencies might enhance the bank’s earnings. The brokerage also noted that the market's anticipation of the leadership transition contributed to the 10% increase in share price over the past two months, contrasting with the broader Nifty Bank index which fell by 4% during the same period.

Anup Kumar Saha joined Kotak Mahindra Bank in January 2026 and has been serving as Whole-time Director (Executive Director) since March 2026. His responsibilities encompass oversight of the Retail Bank, Government Business, Data Analytics, and Marketing functions. Prior to joining Kotak, Saha had a substantial tenure at Bajaj Finance Limited (BFL) from October 2017 to January 2026, where he held various senior positions.

At BFL, he climbed the ranks from President of Consumer Finance to Deputy CEO overseeing Consumer, MSME, Marketing, Operations, Service, and Digital platforms. He later became Executive Director and eventually Managing Director and CEO until his resignation in July 2025. His tenure at BFL involved managing the company’s standalone business comprehensively.

Before his time at Bajaj Finance, Saha spent 14 years at ICICI Bank in multiple senior roles, including leading Retail Secured Assets, Business Intelligence, Retail and Rural Collections, Credit Cards, and Retail Structured Finance. He also represented ICICI Bank as a Nominee Director on the boards of TransUnion CIBIL Limited and ICICI Home Finance Limited. His early career included roles at GE Capital and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, combining experience in credit cards, sales, analytics, and production engineering.

Kotak Mahindra Bank is a significant player in India’s private banking sector, providing a broad range of financial services such as retail and corporate banking, wealth management, and investment banking. Leadership changes at such institutions can influence investor sentiment and impact the bank’s strategic direction. The banking sector in India has been evolving rapidly, with increased competition and regulatory focus driving banks to innovate and enhance their retail banking capabilities.

Jefferies’ positive stance on Kotak Mahindra Bank reflects confidence in the bank’s ability to capitalize on these sector trends, especially under a leader with Saha’s retail banking expertise. Investors will likely watch closely how the transition unfolds and what strategic initiatives the new CEO prioritizes once he assumes office in 2027.
