IREDA Shares Drop from ₹310 to ₹111 Amid Management Updates

Shares of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) have experienced a significant decline over the past two years, dropping more than 60% from their all-time high of ₹310 recorded on 15 July 2024. On 1 October, the stock closed at ₹111 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), marking a 0.61% decrease for the day and a 64% fall from its peak.

Since its initial public offering (IPO) on 29 November 2023, when it was issued at ₹32 per share, IREDA's stock has risen by approximately 247%. Despite this impressive rise from the issue price, the recent downward trend has raised concerns among investors. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen 20%, while over the last 12 months, losses have widened to 28%. The stock experienced a 52-week low of ₹107.40 on 16 September 2026, contrasting with a 52-week high of ₹158.70 on 15 October 2025.

IREDA operates as a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), focusing on promoting, developing, and extending financial assistance to renewable energy projects across India. The company’s role is crucial in supporting India's transition towards cleaner energy sources, aligning with the government's renewable energy targets.

On the management front, IREDA disclosed in an exchange filing dated 1 October 2026 that the government has approved extending the tenure of Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohanty as the company’s Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). Dr. Mohanty, who currently holds the position on an additional charge basis since July 2026, will continue in this role for a further three months starting 1 October 2026. This extension will remain effective until a permanent appointment is made or until further instructions are issued by the ministry.

Dr. Mohanty also serves as the Director of Finance at IREDA, and his temporary leadership has coincided with a period of notable financial performance for the company. According to IREDA’s annual report for the fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26), the agency posted a profit after tax (PAT) of ₹1,873 crore, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year.

The fiscal year also saw record levels in sanctioned loans and disbursements, with ₹51,883 crore approved for renewable energy projects and ₹34,946 crore disbursed. The company’s gross loan portfolio grew to ₹93,069 crore during FY26. These figures highlight IREDA’s expanding role in financing renewable energy installations across the country.

IREDA’s net interest margin (NIM), a key metric indicating profitability on its lending activities, improved to 3.65% in FY26 from 3.27% in FY25. The company attributes this rise to effective fund deployment and a more favorable asset mix, which contributed to stronger financial outcomes.

The renewable energy sector in India has been growing steadily, supported by government initiatives aiming to increase capacity in solar, wind, and other clean energy sources. IREDA’s financial health and management decisions remain under close watch as the company continues to facilitate investments in this strategic sector.

Investors considering IREDA stock should be mindful of the recent price volatility and management changes. Market conditions in renewable energy finance can fluctuate with policy updates, interest rates, and broader economic trends. Consulting with financial advisors is recommended before making investment decisions.
