NSE International Exchange Extends Trading Hours to 23.5 Hours Daily
The NSE International Exchange (NSEIX), operating within India's GIFT City, has increased its trading hours to 23 hours and 30 minutes each day starting November 2, 2026. This move enhances the exchange’s ability to serve market participants by providing near round-the-clock access to Asian, European, and US market sessions.
Previously, NSEIX operated for approximately 22 hours daily. The expansion now sets a new standard for continuous trading, enabling market participants to engage in trading activities almost 24 hours a day, five days a week. According to the exchange, the trading window begins at 3:15 am Indian Standard Time (IST) and closes at 2:45 am the following day. This schedule allows traders to respond promptly to global economic developments and manage their risks more effectively across different time zones.
The exchange has also optimized its maintenance schedule to minimize downtime. Maintenance activities between sessions will take no longer than three minutes, and end-of-day maintenance will be completed within 15 minutes, ensuring a smooth trading experience.
V Balasubramaniam, managing director and chief executive officer of NSEIX, described the extension as a significant achievement in positioning GIFT City as a globally accessible marketplace. The move aligns with the exchange’s goal to attract international investors and enhance liquidity by offering a trading platform that closely matches global market hours.
This development coincides with a notable increase in trading volumes on NSEIX. In October 2026, the total turnover for GIFT Nifty index contracts reached $120.45 billion in notional terms, up from $110.93 billion in September. The GIFT Nifty contracts were transferred to NSEIX from the Singapore Exchange (SGX) on July 3, 2023, marking a strategic shift in the trading landscape for Indian derivatives.
Extended trading hours are not unique to NSEIX; several global exchanges operate beyond the standard eight-hour window. For example, the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) trades for 23 hours, while Eurex operates for nearly 21 hours daily. Below is a comparison of trading hours for major international futures exchanges (all times in IST):
- NSE International Exchange (NSEIX) – 3:15 am to 2:45 am (23 hours 30 minutes)
- Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) – 4:30 am to 3:30 am (23 hours)
- Eurex – 5:40 am to 2:30 am (20 hours 50 minutes)
- ICE Futures Europe – 6:30 am to 2:30 am (20 hours)
- Hong Kong Futures Exchange – 6:45 am to 12:30 am (17 hours 45 minutes)

- Korea Exchange – 5:15 am to 2:30 am (21 hours 15 minutes)

The expansion of trading hours at NSEIX reflects the increasing globalization of financial markets and the growing demand for flexible trading options that accommodate diverse international investors. By aligning its trading schedule with major market hubs around the world, NSEIX aims to enhance its competitiveness and attract higher volumes.
GIFT City, where NSEIX is situated, is India's first operational smart city and international financial services center. It was established to promote financial services and innovation with a focus on attracting foreign investment. The city's infrastructure and regulatory framework are designed to facilitate seamless cross-border transactions and support India's position in global financial markets.
Overall, the extension of NSEIX trading hours signals a strengthening of India's financial market infrastructure, offering traders and investors more opportunities to engage with global markets. This change is expected to drive further growth in trading volumes and contribute to the development of GIFT City as a key international financial hub.
