In October, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reached a significant milestone, with the average daily transaction value surpassing ₹1 trillion for the first time. This surge coincided with the festive season, a period traditionally associated with increased consumer spending. Alongside the record transaction value, the average daily transaction volume also hit a new high, averaging 822 million transactions throughout the month.

During October, UPI processed a total of 25.47 billion transactions, marking a 23 percent increase from the 20.7 billion transactions recorded in October 2025. The total transaction value handled by the system in October 2026 rose to ₹31.53 trillion, which is 16 percent higher than the ₹27.27 trillion processed in the same month the previous year.

This growth reflects a shift in both the number and size of transactions. Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree, explained that the festive season, including events such as Navratri and major online sales, played a key role in driving this increase. Consumers used UPI not only for everyday payments but also for larger purchases related to the celebrations. Datta noted that between April and August, while the number of payments steadily increased, the daily value remained flat and average payment size declined. However, in September and October, the value of payments expanded at a faster pace than transaction volume, resulting in a rise in average payment amounts for two consecutive months.

September's data showed 24.06 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 trillion, while August saw 24.5 billion payments amounting to ₹29.82 trillion. These figures indicate a consistent upward trajectory in both transaction count and value as the year progressed towards the festive season.

The timing of this growth is particularly notable given the impending changes to the payments landscape in India. A proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR), which is a fee charged on certain person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions, was initially planned to take effect on October 15 but has reportedly been postponed until after Diwali. Industry experts emphasize that maintaining the long-term viability of the digital payments ecosystem is crucial, especially during periods of heightened consumer activity.

Akshay Mehrotra, managing director and group chief executive officer of Fibe, highlighted the challenges posed by the MDR proposal. He pointed out the necessity of balancing affordability for both consumers and merchants with the commercial sustainability of the digital payments infrastructure. As transaction volumes peak during times like the festive season, ensuring that digital payments remain cost-effective is essential for continued growth and adoption.

The UPI platform, launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, has transformed the digital payments environment by enabling instant fund transfers through mobile devices. Its widespread adoption has been driven by convenience, interoperability among banks and payment apps, and government initiatives promoting cashless transactions. The recent milestone of crossing ₹1 trillion in average daily transaction value underscores UPI's growing role in India's economy and the increasing reliance on digital payment methods across the country.

As the festive season draws to a close, analysts will be monitoring how the introduction of MDR and other regulatory changes impact transaction volumes and values. The balance between fostering innovation and maintaining a healthy payment ecosystem remains at the forefront of discussions among stakeholders in India's rapidly evolving digital payments market.
