European heating and cooling specialist Bosch Home Comfort Group is preparing to launch Bosch-branded air conditioners in India next year, targeting a substantial market share gain. Sanjay Sudhakaran, Managing Director of Bosch Home Comfort India, revealed the company aims to secure a double-digit share of the Indian air conditioner market within two years. The group also intends to rank among the top five AC brands in the country over the medium term.

As part of its growth strategy, Bosch Home Comfort Group, a division of German conglomerate Bosch GmbH, has adopted a dual-brand approach to strengthen its presence in India’s expanding cooling solutions market. This strategy gained momentum following Bosch’s acquisition of the global residential and light-commercial air conditioning business from Johnson Controls and Hitachi in August 2025.

Sudhakaran explained that the company is positioning its brands to address distinct consumer segments. Hitachi will focus on the mainstream and mass-premium categories, while Bosch will target the performance-premium and super-premium segments. This segmentation allows Bosch Home Comfort to appeal to different customer bases with tailored product portfolios and features.

To support its expansion plans, Bosch Home Comfort is committing around 80 million euros (about Rs 900 crore) over the coming years. These funds will be used to increase manufacturing capacity, enhance localization efforts, and boost engineering and testing capabilities. The investment aligns with the company’s goal of accelerating growth in both residential and light-commercial air conditioning sectors.

Following the acquisition, Bosch Home Comfort took over Hitachi’s air-conditioning operations in India and aims to revitalize its offerings in the fast-growing mainstream and mass-premium segments. Meanwhile, the Bosch-branded air conditioners will focus on the niche performance-premium market, competing with established players such as O General and Mitsubishi Electric. These products are expected to be priced starting around Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000 and above.

"Our approach is to position Bosch as a super-premium brand and Hitachi as a mainstream brand," Sudhakaran noted. He emphasized that each brand will maintain distinct value propositions and product features, with Bosch leveraging its German engineering heritage and premium brand image, while Hitachi continues to draw on its expertise in air conditioning and Japanese engineering standards.

India’s room air conditioner market presents significant growth opportunities due to low current penetration, increasing disposable incomes, and a strengthening economy. Bosch views this environment as a favorable runway for expansion. Sudhakaran expressed optimism, saying the company plans to grow faster than the overall market in all segments.

The 80 million euro investment will also facilitate Bosch Home Comfort’s push into light-commercial air conditioning products, including variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems under the Hitachi brand. Production of the latest Hitachi VRF units is underway at the company’s manufacturing site in Kadi, Gujarat. The company has also expanded its global research and development center in Ahmedabad, focusing on innovations in light-commercial AC technologies. The Kadi plant currently has an annual capacity exceeding one million units.

Looking ahead, Bosch Home Comfort may consider establishing a new manufacturing facility in southern India to meet growing demand, although Sudhakaran did not confirm this plan. The company’s manufacturing strategy emphasizes localization and integrated production to improve cost efficiency and expand product offerings. Approximately 75 percent of procurement is sourced domestically, with imports accounting for the remainder, mainly items unavailable locally.

At the Kadi plant, Bosch Home Comfort produces many components in-house, including heat exchangers, indoor unit molds, condensing units, sheet metal parts, tubing, and coils. Painting operations also take place there. The company prioritizes domestic manufacturing over imports, even when exchange rates or other economic factors might make imports more attractive. Additionally, Bosch Home Comfort benefits from a joint venture with a global compressor manufacturer operating in Ahmedabad, securing a reliable supply of compressors.

On the distribution front, Bosch Home Comfort plans to build on Hitachi’s existing network of retailers and service partners to market both brands. It will also explore opportunities to integrate Bosch-branded air conditioners into the retail footprint of Bosch’s consumer appliances division. The company expects to leverage synergies across sales, service, manufacturing, research and development, supply chains, and human resources to optimize operations.

Both large-format and regional retailers, as well as online platforms, will remain key channels for reaching consumers. Sudhakaran highlighted that while backend operations will be unified, the brands will maintain distinct market positioning and product differentiation.

Globally, Bosch Home Comfort Group manages a portfolio of renowned brands such as Bosch, Hitachi, York, and Buderus, offering a wide range of heating, cooling, and comfort solutions. The company’s focused investment and strategic branding in India reflect its commitment to tapping into the country’s rapidly growing air conditioning market.
