NSE Chairman Injeti on Self-Listing Feasibility and Market Prospects

Srinivas Injeti, the chairman of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), addressed the topic of NSE trading its own shares on its platform. Speaking on Friday, he confirmed that self-listing remains a feasible option, though it is not currently permitted under existing regulations.

NSE's shares were officially listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Thursday and are also being traded on the Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India (MSEI) under a special permitted-to-trade status. The debut saw the stock open at Rs 1,800, a slight premium of 0.8 percent over its issue price of Rs 1,785.

Injeti highlighted the regulatory challenges that self-listing poses, primarily because the exchange would be in the position of regulating itself. Indian exchanges have a broader regulatory role compared to many international counterparts, which raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. These concerns necessitate careful management and oversight.

He drew parallels to past regulatory evolutions within India’s financial sector, noting that listing of market infrastructure institutions was not allowed until 2012 but became a reality by 2015. This gradual relaxation of rules in other jurisdictions could eventually be mirrored in India, suggesting that although self-listing is not currently allowed, it might be permitted in the future.

"Self-listing may not be permitted today, but may be permitted tomorrow," Injeti remarked. Until any regulatory changes occur, NSE plans to operate within the current framework, similar to how BSE has been listed on NSE’s platform.

The stock’s initial trading session saw some volatility. After reaching an intraday high of Rs 1,830 on BSE, the share price closed at Rs 1,792.65, down by 1.4 percent from the previous close. Despite this, NSE’s management remains confident about the exchange’s medium- to long-term growth potential.

Injeti described NSE as more of a "family silver" investment rather than a vehicle for rapid profits, citing its strong connection to India's expanding capital markets and the increasing financialization of household savings. He suggested that the stock’s downside risks appear limited over time given these fundamental market trends.

Regarding NSE’s revenue composition, the exchange generates 90 percent of its operating income from derivatives trading. Options account for the largest share at 60 percent, followed by futures at 9 percent, cash equities also at 9 percent, and data and connectivity services contributing 12 percent.

Within options trading, weekly index options contribute 46 percent of revenue, a decrease from the previous 75-80 percent range. Monthly index options represent 6 percent, and single-stock options make up 8 percent. NSE maintains a dominant position in these segments, holding a full 100 percent market share.

On the commodities front, NSE has seen significant growth in crude oil premium turnover, which has risen from zero to approximately Rs 10,000-12,000 crore per month. The exchange expects this to increase further to Rs 20,000-25,000 crore in the coming months. This growth is supported by new regulatory approvals that allow foreign portfolio investors to participate in bullion contracts. Additionally, NSE offers margin fungibility across asset classes, a unique feature that enhances its platform’s attractiveness to traders.

The developments at NSE reflect broader trends in Indian capital markets, where exchanges are expanding product offerings and adapting to evolving regulatory environments. As India’s financial sector grows, exchanges like NSE play a crucial role in facilitating market access, liquidity, and innovation.

Injeti’s comments underline the cautious yet optimistic approach NSE takes towards future possibilities, including self-listing and expanding market segments. Investors and market participants will be watching closely as regulations evolve and NSE navigates its growth trajectory amid these changes.
