Colgate Palmolive Shares Jump 7.6% After GST Council Revises ITC Rules

Shares of Colgate Palmolive India experienced a notable surge on Friday, climbing by 7.6 percent after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council announced revisions to input tax credit (ITC) regulations. The stock began the trading session at ₹1,736.20 and reached an intraday peak of ₹1,868.90 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). By mid-afternoon at 2:50 PM, the price was steady at ₹1,845.90, up approximately 6.35 percent. This performance stood in contrast to the broader market, with the Nifty 50 index declining by 1.48 percent to 22,560.20 during the same period.

The GST Council's recent policy changes expanded the scope of expenses eligible for ITC, which allows businesses to offset the tax paid on inputs against their overall tax liability. Among the key amendments, companies can now claim credit on health and life insurance premiums for employees. Additionally, ITC is permitted for capital expenditures such as telecommunication towers and pipelines installed outside factory premises. These changes are significant for sectors where these assets represent substantial investments.

Another important update includes ITC eligibility on free product samples and inventory that is written off after the expiration of its shelf life, provided that legal mandates require the destruction of such goods. This particular revision is expected to positively impact fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies that often distribute free samples as part of their marketing strategies.

Sunny Agrawal, head of fundamental research at SBI Securities, commented on the implications of the GST Council's decision. He highlighted that allowing ITC on free samples and expired goods slated for destruction could benefit FMCG companies like Colgate Palmolive. Agrawal also pointed out that the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q1FY27) marked one of the strongest performance periods since the last quarter of fiscal year 2025, underscoring improving fundamentals.

He further noted that Colgate Palmolive's stock had experienced a roughly 50 percent correction since January 2025 but was now trading at a trailing twelve-month price-to-earnings (TTM PE) ratio of 37 times, which he described as comfortable. With the festive season approaching, Agrawal expressed optimism about the prospects for consumer staple firms to report healthy earnings growth in the near term.

In its Q1FY27 earnings report, Colgate Palmolive India posted a 7 percent increase in net profit, reaching ₹343.08 crore compared to ₹320.62 crore during the same quarter last year. This growth was driven by strong volume gains in its toothpaste segment and improved profit margins. The company's sales rose 12 percent year-over-year to ₹1,590.56 crore for the quarter ending June 2027. Meanwhile, total expenses increased by 13.8 percent to ₹1,160.57 crore, and total income, including other income sources, was ₹1,626.10 crore, reflecting a 12 percent rise from the previous year.

Colgate Palmolive India is a leading player in the oral hygiene market, known for its diverse offerings that include toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other personal care products. The company operates in a competitive FMCG sector where consumer demand, cost management, and regulatory developments such as GST policy changes play crucial roles in shaping financial outcomes.

The GST Council's decision to broaden ITC eligibility aligns with broader government efforts to enhance ease of doing business and reduce tax burdens on companies. By enabling credits on a wider range of expenditures, businesses can improve their cash flow and profitability, which in turn may support investment and growth.

Investors and market watchers closely monitor such regulatory updates because they can influence company valuations and sector-wide sentiment. The positive market reaction to Colgate Palmolive’s shares on Friday reflects confidence that these GST changes will have a tangible benefit for FMCG companies, especially those with significant spending on employee benefits, infrastructure, and promotional activities.

While the stock's recent rally is encouraging, market participants remain attentive to upcoming quarterly results and broader economic indicators. The festive season in India typically boosts consumption of consumer staples, offering an additional tailwind for companies like Colgate Palmolive. However, factors such as raw material costs, competitive pressures, and overall market conditions will continue to influence performance in the coming months.
