TVS Family Dispute: Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan Deny Economic Settlement
Lakshmi Venu and her mother Mallika Srinivasan have jointly addressed the ongoing disagreements within the Venu Srinivasan family concerning ownership and control of assets in the TVS Group. They firmly stated that no economic settlement has been finalized among family members regarding the division of business interests.
In a detailed statement, the two clarified that while a broader family partition involving the larger TVS family was agreed upon in 2020 and subsequently executed with the participation of all relevant stakeholders, no similar transparent process has taken place within the Venu Srinivasan family branch. They emphasized that no discussions involving clear valuation or mutual consent have occurred, and no agreement has been reached to divide economic interests among them.
The statement also challenged any notion suggesting that all family assets are held exclusively by a single individual who could decide their distribution unilaterally. Such a position has neither been agreed to nor established, according to Lakshmi and Mallika. They pointed out that the core issue does not revolve around management roles within the businesses, which have already been adequately compensated, but rather concerns the recognition and fair division of rightful economic ownership—an issue that remains unresolved.
They further explained that management responsibilities and economic ownership should be considered separate matters. Assigning leadership roles or business management duties does not equate to dividing family assets. Nor can such appointments replace the legitimate economic stakes family members hold. The statement specifically mentioned that agreements related to trademarks, brand rights, and non-compete clauses cannot be mistaken for economic settlements if no explicit economic terms were part of those arrangements.
Mallika Srinivasan also addressed misplaced references to TAFE in the discussion. She made it clear that TAFE belongs to the Amalgamations Group, a distinct family business where she is a shareholder. According to her, TAFE’s operations and ownership are unrelated to the economic settlement issues within the Venu Srinivasan family. Presenting her role at TAFE as evidence of an equitable division of economic interests within the Venu Srinivasan family is misleading.
The joint statement stressed that the current arrangements within the family were made unilaterally and lack consensus or fairness. They called for any fair settlement to acknowledge the legitimate economic claims of all parties involved and to be founded on a transparent process of valuation, open discussion, and mutual agreement.
Looking ahead, Lakshmi and Mallika expressed commitment to resolving these disagreements through constructive dialogue grounded in dignity, respect, and equity. They believe that reaching an early, fair, and amicable solution would benefit not only the family but also the businesses and their broader stakeholder community.
The TVS Group is one of India’s prominent industrial conglomerates, with diverse business interests spanning automotive manufacturing, finance, and engineering. Family disputes over ownership and control can have significant implications for such large family-run enterprises, affecting governance, strategy, and market confidence. The clarification from Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan highlights the complexities of managing shared family assets in major business groups and the necessity for transparent agreements to ensure smooth operations and harmony among stakeholders.
As this situation develops, industry watchers will be paying close attention to how the family addresses these unresolved issues. Fair resolution could set a precedent for other family-run businesses grappling with similar challenges in succession planning and asset division.
