NCDEX Expands into Equity Markets with NDEX and FINNDEX Indices
NCDEX, previously known as the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange, took a significant step forward on Thursday by introducing two new equity indices named NDEX and FINNDEX. This launch signifies the exchange’s strategic shift from its traditional focus on agricultural commodity trading to establishing itself as a multi-segment market infrastructure provider.
The NDEX index consists of 20 prominent and actively traded stocks selected from the top 60 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Meanwhile, FINNDEX targets the financial sector specifically, comprising 15 stocks selected from the top 40 eligible companies, with insurance firms excluded from this group.
To determine the composition of these indices, NCDEX applies a composite scoring method. This approach assigns 30 percent weight each to free-float market capitalization and average daily traded value, while beta and volatility contribute 20 percent each. This methodology aims to balance company size, trading activity, and sensitivity to market fluctuations, creating a well-rounded benchmark.
To maintain diversification and limit concentration risk, the exchange has capped the weight of any individual stock at 15 percent during periodic rebalancing. Both indices will be reviewed and adjusted twice yearly, in March and September, with the option for unscheduled reconstitution if necessary.
Vikas Goel, the managing director and chief executive officer of NCDEX, described the launch of NDEX and FINNDEX as a key milestone in the company’s evolution into a multi-segment exchange. He highlighted the growing importance of transparent and thoughtfully designed benchmarks as India’s capital markets deepen and draw more domestic and international investors. According to Goel, these indices are designed to aid investors by providing clearer insights and expanding the investment tools available in the market.
In addition to launching these indices, NCDEX has recently entered the mutual fund transaction space and is preparing to start its equity trading segment. According to industry sources, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is expected to grant final approval for the equity segment by January.
Following this regulatory clearance, NCDEX plans to introduce derivatives based on the NDEX and FINNDEX indices, potentially in the latter half of the next financial year. This development would further diversify the exchange’s offerings and enable market participants to hedge and speculate on equity market movements using NCDEX’s platforms.
NCDEX’s expansion comes at a time when India’s financial markets are undergoing rapid growth and increased integration with global markets. As exchanges diversify their product range beyond traditional commodities, investors gain access to a broader array of instruments tailored to different risk profiles and investment strategies.
By building a presence in equity and derivatives markets, NCDEX aims to compete with established players and provide alternative venues for trading and investment. The launch of NDEX and FINNDEX represents a foundational step in this broader strategy, setting the stage for further innovation and market development.
