ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Reports 19.45% Drop in VNB for FY24

ICICI Prudential Life Insurance announced a notable decrease in its Value of New Business (VNB) for the fiscal year 2024, posting a 19.45 percent decline to Rs 2,227 crore from Rs 2,765 crore in the previous year. The VNB margin also saw a significant drop, falling to 24.6 percent from 32 percent in FY23, according to the company’s quarterly results released on April 23, 2024.

VNB is a critical metric in the life insurance sector as it reflects the expected profitability from newly issued policies. The company’s Chief Financial Officer, Dhiren Salian, attributed the fall in VNB to several key factors during the post-earnings conference call. He pointed to changes in the product mix, intensified pricing competition, and a rise in operational expenses as the main contributors to the decline.

One notable trend affecting the insurer’s margins is the shift in investor preferences towards unit-linked insurance plans (ULIPs). These products have gained traction due to increased stock market optimism, but they typically offer lower margins compared to traditional insurance plans. Additionally, the company has been impacted by recent tax changes on non-linked policies with premiums exceeding Rs 5 lakh, a factor that has influenced the broader insurance industry.

Expenses have also increased because of a redesign in the commission structure, leading to higher commission payouts. Salian reassured stakeholders that the revised commission costs have been accounted for in the current financial year and that the unit cost of operations is expected to stabilize going forward.

Despite the pressure on profitability, the company’s Annual Premium Equivalent (APE), which measures new business sales volume, experienced growth. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance reported a 4.69 percent increase in APE, reaching Rs 9,046 crore in FY24, signaling steady demand for its insurance products even amid challenging market conditions.

The company’s net profit for the quarter ending March 2024 declined by 26 percent year-over-year, falling to Rs 174 crore. Following these results, the board declared a final dividend of Rs 0.6 per equity share, with each share having a face value of Rs 10.

ICICI Prudential Life Insurance is among India’s leading private sector insurers, offering a range of life insurance and investment products. The life insurance market in India has been evolving rapidly, influenced by regulatory changes, competitive pricing, and shifting consumer preferences. As investors increasingly favor market-linked products, insurers are adjusting their strategies to balance growth and profitability.

The company’s focus on expanding its absolute VNB reflects a strategic priority to improve profitability while navigating the pressures of a competitive landscape. Cost management and product innovation will likely be key areas of focus in the upcoming periods.

For investors and policyholders, these developments underscore the dynamic nature of the insurance sector and the challenges companies face in maintaining growth amid changing market and regulatory environments. ICICI Prudential’s performance in FY24 provides insight into broader industry trends and highlights the importance of adapting business models to sustain long-term value creation.
