RBI Governor Sees India Gaining from Global AI Stock Correction Amid Market Risks

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra addressed the evolving situation in global financial markets, focusing on the recent correction in artificial intelligence (AI) related stocks and its potential implications for India. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave in New Delhi on 3 October, Malhotra described the current downward adjustment in Indian share prices as measured and orderly, contrasting it with sharper shifts seen elsewhere.

Global markets have experienced a surge in AI-related equity valuations driven by strong earnings and investor enthusiasm. This AI investment wave has been a key factor supporting market gains in advanced economies. However, as the investment phase matures, any reduction in AI spending or earnings growth could prompt a notable revaluation of assets linked to this sector. Malhotra pointed out that increased risk-taking and higher leverage levels, combined with falling free cash flows among prominent AI companies, might amplify market corrections and heighten volatility.

The RBI Governor flagged several vulnerabilities in the current global financial landscape. Besides inflated AI stock prices, he identified high public debt levels, expanded shadow banking leverage, growing private credit, and rising cyber risks as areas that could pose challenges. Despite these concerns, Malhotra reassured that none of these factors currently signal an impending financial crisis.

Against this backdrop, India's economic fundamentals remain sturdy. The country benefits from strong macroeconomic indicators and robust balance sheets among banks and non-bank financial institutions. This resilience, Malhotra explained, could position India favorably if international investors seek alternatives following a downturn in AI valuations in developed countries. He suggested that a correction in AI stocks abroad might result in increased capital inflows to India, boosting its financial markets.

Malhotra also touched on the interconnectedness of global financial systems and the risks that could arise from spillover effects. He highlighted that while India is exposed to external shocks through factors like energy prices, global monetary policies, and capital flows, its market has shown considerable strength in absorbing these impacts.

An important concern raised by the RBI head was the growing threat of cyber risks. With AI technologies becoming more sophisticated, vulnerabilities in cybersecurity defenses pose a significant danger. Since cybersecurity capabilities vary widely across regions, a breach in one part of the world could cascade into broader financial disruptions. Malhotra emphasized that future financial disturbances might not originate from traditional banking systems but could instead stem from technological failures or cyberattacks.

In managing these risks, Malhotra urged policymakers to carefully monitor technological dependencies and the channels through which financial contagion could spread internationally. At the same time, he cautioned against excessive regulation that might hinder innovation and economic growth. The goal, he said, should be to build a financial network capable of withstanding shocks without restricting progress.

"It is not that I see any imminent signs of stress," Malhotra stated, adding that vigilance remains essential in light of evolving risks. He expressed confidence in India's capacity to endure ongoing uncertainties thanks to its strong macroeconomic foundations and resilient financial institutions.

The global AI boom has undeniably influenced markets, but as the cycle evolves, investors and regulators alike must adapt to new realities. India's current position, supported by prudent financial management and a stable economy, may allow it to benefit from shifts triggered elsewhere. At the same time, awareness of emerging vulnerabilities, especially in cyber domains, will be critical in maintaining market stability going forward.
