Emkay Global Upgrades GAIL Stock with 16% Upside Potential

Brokerage firm Emkay Global has raised its rating on GAIL (India), a prominent public sector undertaking in the gas sector, from ‘add’ to ‘buy’. The upgrade comes as Emkay highlights GAIL’s solid core business performance and optimistic earnings prospects, along with attractive valuation metrics. The brokerage has set a target price of ₹200 for GAIL shares, anticipating an upside of approximately 15.6% from current levels.

GAIL has delivered a notable 26% return over the past six months, reflecting resilience amid challenging market conditions, including geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and fluctuating LNG prices. Emkay’s analysis points to a structural increase in gas transmission volumes, especially in pipelines where tariffs are higher due to competitive bidding processes. This trend supports a stable medium-term outlook for the company.

Despite a slight year-on-year dip of 2% in India’s gas demand during July and August 2026, demand improved sequentially in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 (2QFY27). GAIL’s gas transmission volumes are expected to rise quarter-on-quarter and could surpass the company’s full-year FY27 guidance of 123 million metric standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd).

While gas marketing margins may moderate as formula-based trailing averages normalize, Emkay believes GAIL’s FY27 guidance of ₹40-45 billion in marketing earnings could be exceeded. This expectation is supported by stable Henry Hub settlement prices and robust crude oil and spot LNG prices. Emkay uses a Brent crude price assumption of $85 per barrel for its forecast, although the average price in the first half of FY27 has been closer to $100 per barrel, suggesting upside potential to earnings estimates.

Emkay also anticipates sequential improvement in the petrochemical segment’s EBITDA, with plant utilization near full capacity. The brokerage has modestly raised its FY27 to FY29 earnings per share (EPS) estimates by 2-3% after incorporating updated FY26 data. Additionally, it has rolled over its projections to September 2028.

One factor that could unlock further value is GAIL Gas’s initial public offering (IPO), which is currently in the request for proposal (RFP) stage. A potential listing in the coming year could highlight the value of GAIL’s extensive city gas distribution (CGD) network. Emkay conservatively values the company’s unlisted assets at one times price-to-book value.

The medium-term outlook remains steady due to ongoing structural growth in gas transmission volumes. GAIL is expected to benefit from an increasing share of volumes in pipelines awarded at higher tariffs. Furthermore, upcoming petrochemical projects like the Mangalore PTA and Usar PDH-PP plants, slated for commissioning within the next 12 to 18 months, could serve as additional growth drivers. Emkay has not included earnings from these projects in its current estimates, although capital expenditures have been factored in.

GAIL’s expansion plans also include entry into the fertilizer sector through two urea projects along the Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda pipeline. These projects, with a combined annual capacity of around 2.5 million tonnes, are expected to deliver assured returns between 12% and 16%. They will also provide steady gas volumes of approximately 4 to 5 mmscmd, supporting pipeline utilization.

On the stock performance front, GAIL shares have faced some short-term pressure, declining 0.69% over the past week and 1.60% in the last month. Year-to-date, the stock has remained largely flat, with a slight gain of 0.54% in 2026. Over the previous year, the stock has dropped 0.99%, indicating some medium-term challenges. However, the longer-term trend shows stronger performance, with a 41.09% gain over three years and nearly 70% return in the last five years.

GAIL’s position as a key player in India’s gas infrastructure sector is supported by its extensive pipeline network and diversified business segments. The company’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions and pursue growth projects suggests potential for sustained performance. For investors, Emkay’s upgrade signals confidence in GAIL’s medium-term earnings trajectory and valuation appeal.
