Narayana Murthy’s Family Office Plans to Double India Investments

The family office of Narayana Murthy, the renowned tech billionaire and founder of Infosys Ltd., is set to significantly increase its investment footprint in India over the coming five years. The strategy aims to capitalize on emerging opportunities in precision manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI), broadening a portfolio that includes both publicly traded and private companies.

Deepak Padaki, president of Catamaran Ventures LLP, which manages the family office’s investments, shared insights on the firm’s growth ambitions during Bloomberg’s New Economy Forum held recently. Catamaran Ventures oversees assets amounting to $1.4 billion on behalf of Murthy. Their target is to achieve annual returns between 16% and 18%, balancing investments across public markets and private ventures.

Catamaran’s approach focuses on sectors where Indian enterprises have the potential to develop competitive advantages for international customers. The firm’s portfolio features notable holdings such as SpaceX, Elon Musk’s aerospace company, and the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd., reflecting their diverse investment interests.

AI stands out as a critical area of focus. Instead of concentrating solely on companies developing AI models, Catamaran is particularly interested in Indian firms that provide specialized AI services and solutions to global enterprise clients. Padaki emphasized that the firm tracks growth-stage companies delivering AI-driven enterprise solutions, recognizing that India can play a significant role in supporting larger businesses worldwide through innovation and expertise.

This investment emphasis aligns with a worldwide expansion of AI capabilities. As organizations race to enhance their AI offerings, there is a growing demand for the underlying computing infrastructure, including data centers and supporting services essential for AI development and deployment. India’s role is viewed as extending beyond just creating AI models—it includes building and managing the infrastructure and technical know-how that global players require.

Data centers have thus become a prime area of interest. The increase in AI workloads drives the need for energy-efficient solutions, advanced cooling systems, and high-performance computing and storage facilities. Catamaran sees strong potential in Indian companies that can cater to these growing infrastructure demands.

In addition to AI and data centers, precision manufacturing is another focus sector. Padaki pointed out that as companies worldwide diversify their supply chains, there is a rising demand for specialized suppliers. Indian manufacturers have a chance to move up the value chain by producing components and products that meet stringent international quality standards. This shift could help India become a key player in global manufacturing networks.

Catamaran Ventures’ investment plan reflects broader trends within India’s economy and the global technology landscape. With the country’s increasing emphasis on innovation, technology-driven services, and manufacturing capabilities, family offices and institutional investors are identifying new avenues for growth. By blending investments in both public and private companies, Catamaran aims to support Indian enterprises in scaling their global impact.

Narayana Murthy’s family office expanding its stake in these sectors signals confidence in India’s evolving business environment and its growing importance in the global technology and manufacturing ecosystems. As the country advances in its development of AI infrastructure and precision manufacturing, these investments could contribute significantly to shaping India’s economic future.
