Canadian Firm VZFOX Expands into Indian Energy Sector
Canadian subsurface engineering company VZFOX has announced its plans to establish a presence in India, aiming to support the country’s efforts to strengthen domestic energy production and reduce its reliance on imported crude oil. The entry into the Indian market marks a strategic step for VZFOX as India intensifies its focus on energy self-sufficiency amidst global supply uncertainties.
VZFOX specializes in mature-field revitalization, reservoir optimization, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), Improved Oil Recovery (IOR), injection and field redevelopment. The firm also supports emerging projects related to carbon dioxide storage and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), reflecting growing global interest in carbon management technologies.
With expertise in reservoir characterization, production and pressure analysis, compartment identification, injection optimization, infill and recompletion screening, and EOR/IOR evaluation, VZFOX helps operators identify opportunities for additional resource recovery. Their approach focuses on determining which interventions provide the best technical results and economic returns.
Currently, VZFOX is assembling a dedicated technical team in India, with plans to open an office in Bengaluru by the end of this year. The initial team will consist of five members, with intentions to expand organically as their business develops in the region.
The company already serves clients in North America and other international markets, working closely with operator teams as a strategic and technical advisor. Their role involves reducing subsurface uncertainty, challenging existing assumptions, and linking reservoir understanding to decisions on field development, capital investment, and implementation.
VZFOX’s services align with operators’ goals such as enhancing recovery from existing fields, evaluating EOR and IOR opportunities, designing injection strategies, and advancing carbon storage and CCUS projects. These capabilities are particularly relevant as India seeks to increase its domestic oil output and invest in cleaner energy technologies.
“Our discussions with Indian oil and gas companies reveal strong engineering capabilities locally,” said Vick Saxon, managing partner and director at VZFOX. “We see potential to assist operators in extracting more value from their existing energy assets.”
Saxon noted that Canada’s deep experience with complex, mature reservoirs is backed by a robust technical ecosystem and regulatory environment. In contrast, India offers scale, a vast portfolio of producing assets, and a pressing need to bolster domestic production alongside rising investments in carbon management.
“Our goal is to complement India’s existing efforts by bringing our technical expertise directly to energy projects. We envision India as a long-term market rather than a short-term opportunity,” Saxon added.
VZFOX’s entry into the Indian market coincides with its selection to participate in the Government of Canada’s Team Canada Trade Mission to India, which focuses on advancing clean technologies and the energy transition.
Vinay Kumar, executive director and senior adviser at VZFOX, explained that while the trade mission serves as a gateway to India, the company intends to proceed cautiously. “We plan to start with a core team of five to support operations and grow as our footprint expands. Our immediate focus is on cultivating meaningful partnerships with Indian operators, engineering organizations, EPCs, and project developers where our subsurface expertise adds value,” Kumar said.
India’s energy security has become a heightened concern due to recent instability in West Asia. This urgency coincides with India’s efforts to reduce its crude oil import dependence, which increased to 88.7 percent in the fiscal year 2026 from 85.5 percent in 2022. Meanwhile, domestic crude oil production has declined from 29.7 million tonnes in 2022 to 28 million tonnes in 2026.
By entering the Indian market, VZFOX aims to contribute to efforts that enhance domestic oil recovery and support the country’s transition towards sustainable energy practices, aligning with broader global trends in energy security and carbon management.
