Biocon Q2 Profit Drops 52% to ₹41 Crore Due to Shipment Delays
Bengaluru-based pharmaceutical company Biocon reported a significant 52 percent decline in consolidated net profit for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q2FY27), posting ₹41 crore compared to ₹85 crore in the same quarter last year. This reduction was primarily due to delayed shipments valued at roughly $20 million that missed the quarter-end revenue recognition cutoff, although their associated costs were already accounted for.
The company's revenue from operations increased modestly by 2 percent, reaching ₹4,389 crore during the quarter. However, the net profit contraction from ₹85 crore a year earlier and ₹141 crore in the preceding quarter highlighted the impact of shipment timing on financial results. Biocon announced these figures during market hours, with its shares closing slightly higher by 0.19 percent at ₹344 on the BSE.
Managing Director Shreehas Tambe explained that these delayed shipments accounted for about 5 percent of Biocon's biopharma revenue. The disruptions stemmed from ongoing geopolitical issues that postponed delivery to customers beyond September, thereby preventing revenue recognition under accounting standards for Q2. The revenue will instead be recorded in the third quarter after the products were sold in October. Tambe emphasized that this was purely a timing and accounting issue rather than an indication of any fundamental business weakness.
The company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) also declined by 7 percent to ₹865 crore, with margins slipping to 20 percent from 22 percent a year ago. Tambe noted that margins are expected to stabilize in the mid-20s percentage range, although he did not provide specific forecasts for the latter half of the fiscal year.
Within Biocon’s business segments, biopharma revenue grew 5 percent to ₹3,583 crore. Biosimilars contributed a 3 percent rise, while generics saw a stronger increase of 10 percent. Meanwhile, services revenue, which primarily comes from Biocon’s contract research arm Syngene, dropped 9 percent year-on-year but showed a sequential growth of 13 percent over the previous quarter. For the first half of FY27, biopharma revenue climbed 11 percent and net profit surged 57 percent to ₹182 crore.
Tambe expressed optimism about the second half of the fiscal year, citing four main growth drivers. Biocon’s ustekinumab biosimilar, branded Yesintek, holds a 34 percent share of the US market, demonstrating strong traction. Its aflibercept biosimilar, Yesafili, is in the process of scaling up. Additionally, Biocon signed a decade-long pertuzumab supply agreement worth around $400 million for Brazil, with deliveries slated to begin in the fourth quarter. Concurrently, a European launch of pertuzumab is anticipated in the same quarter, targeting a $600 to $700 million market where Biocon and Organon are the only approved suppliers.
Biocon has also expanded its insulin production capacity with the commissioning of a second fill-finish line in Malaysia, aimed at meeting growing demand in the US market. On the semaglutide front, the company has transferred technology to its Brazilian partner Biomm, which is awaiting regulatory approval from Anvisa. Tambe indicated that the approval process may take between 12 to 24 months but declined to provide details on regulatory status in Canada.
When asked about the potential impact of the US midterm elections, Tambe observed that both political parties are focused on healthcare cost reduction measures. He expressed confidence that Biocon would remain relatively insulated from policy shifts, stating, "We are a part of the solution." This reflects Biocon’s positioning as a provider of affordable biosimilars and generics within the pharmaceutical sector.
Biocon operates in a competitive global landscape where biosimilars and generics are increasingly important for addressing healthcare affordability and access. The company’s focus on expanding product portfolios, entering new markets, and enhancing manufacturing capabilities aligns with broader industry trends favoring cost-effective biologic treatments. Despite short-term revenue timing challenges, Biocon’s fundamentals remain supported by its portfolio strength and strategic partnerships.
