Airtel Money Launches £529M IPO on London Stock Exchange

Airtel Mobile Commerce NV, the financial services unit of Airtel Africa known as Airtel Money, announced plans to raise £529 million through its initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange. The company intends to offer 270 million shares at £1.96 each, valuing the business at approximately £5.3 billion (around $7 billion).

This valuation could position Airtel Money as one of the largest public market debuts on the London Stock Exchange in the last five years, according to estimates from Bloomberg. The IPO reflects growing investor interest in fintech platforms operating in Africa’s expanding digital economy.

Several existing investors will be selling shares as part of the offering. These include private equity firm TPG-backed The Rise Fund II Aurora, the Qatari sovereign wealth fund Qatar Holding, Mastercard Inc, and Chimetech. These investors initially acquired minority stakes in Airtel Money in 2021, investing a combined $550 million at that time.

Additionally, Bharti Airtel International, Airtel Africa’s parent company, may sell up to 27 million more shares under an over-allotment option once trading commences on October 14. Based on current indications, about 16.5 percent of Airtel Money’s shares will be publicly held following the IPO, potentially rising to 17.5 percent if the over-allotment is exercised.

Airtel Africa plans to remain a strategic shareholder, supporting Airtel Money's growth as an independent, publicly listed entity. The company expects its free float to qualify Airtel Money for inclusion in FTSE UK stock indices, which could enhance visibility among global investors.

Operating in 13 African countries, Airtel Money has expanded its digital financial services since its launch in September 2011. As of June 30, it reported 53 million monthly active users. The company’s customer base has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20 percent since the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018, while its penetration within Airtel Africa’s telecom subscriber base increased from 20 percent to 41 percent over the same time.

The platform’s total processed transaction value has surged by 33 percent CAGR to reach $213 billion. For the fiscal year ending March 2026, Airtel Money generated $1.3 billion in revenue with an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin near 50 percent. These financial metrics highlight the company’s growing role in Africa’s mobile money and digital payments landscape.

In preparation for the IPO, Airtel Money also entered an agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Under this deal, existing shareholders will sell shares valued at up to £67.2 million ($90 million) at the IPO offer price.

Prominent investment banks Citigroup, Barclays, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase are managing the share offering. Their involvement underscores the significant market interest in African fintech companies tapping into rapidly expanding mobile and digital financial services markets.

The IPO comes at a time when digital financial platforms in Africa are attracting substantial capital due to the continent’s accelerating mobile adoption and increasing demand for accessible financial services. Airtel Money’s public listing provides an opportunity for broader investor participation in this dynamic sector.
