Macquarie Rates NSE 'The Dominator' with ₹1,965 Target Price
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has received a favorable rating from Macquarie, which has started coverage on the exchange shortly after its initial public offering. The brokerage assigned an Outperform tag to NSE and set a price target of ₹1,965 per share, reflecting a potential upside of around 10% from its recent closing price of ₹1,792 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Macquarie's positive outlook on NSE centers on the exchange's commanding market position, advanced technology infrastructure, and significant liquidity. These factors, combined with the firm's diverse service offerings, underpin what Macquarie calls NSE's role as 'The Dominator' in India's capital market ecosystem.
According to the brokerage, NSE holds a dominant market share in multiple segments, including a 93% share in cash equity trading and nearly full control of equity futures and currency options markets. It also commands a leading position in equity options and interest rate futures. This extensive reach across trading, clearing, settlement, listing, connectivity, market data, and index licensing contributes to NSE’s robust revenue model.
While the brokerage anticipates some competitive pressures from the Bombay Stock Exchange in cash equities and options, it expects that NSE's market expansion and introduction of new products will help mitigate these impacts. Macquarie also highlighted the growing importance of non-transaction revenues, which currently represent approximately 21% of NSE's total income. These are projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13% through fiscal year 2030, driven by data services, analytics, index-related offerings, connectivity, and post-trade solutions.
Macquarie foresees NSE's revenue growing at a 12% CAGR between fiscal years 2026 and 2030, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margins stabilizing in the mid-70% range. The brokerage forecasts revenue to climb from ₹166 billion in FY26 to ₹230.8 billion by FY29. Net profit is expected to increase from ₹103 billion in FY26 to nearly ₹150 billion in FY29. EBITDA margins are set to remain resilient, supported by NSE's technology-driven and low-variable-cost business model.
In addition to strong financial metrics, NSE's balance sheet is solid, with approximately ₹510 billion in cash and minimal debt reported in FY26. Macquarie also projects the return on equity (ROE) to stay around 35% through FY30, underscoring the exchange’s profitability and efficient capital use.
The brokerage anticipates that NSE's earnings growth will enable increasing shareholder returns, forecasting dividends per share to rise from ₹35 in FY26 to ₹50.5 by FY30 while maintaining a payout ratio of 75% from FY27 onward.
Key growth drivers identified by Macquarie include resolution of clearing and settlement issues, growth in monthly options volumes, and heightened market activity linked to large initial public offerings. However, the brokerage noted risks such as regulatory changes, reliance on index options, and lower-than-expected traction in non-transaction revenue segments.
NSE's public debut was marked by a modest premium, with shares opening at ₹1,800 on the BSE, slightly above the issue price of ₹1,785. Despite a small dip of 1.4% on September 25, following gains in the prior session, the stock remains well positioned according to Macquarie’s analysis.
As India’s financial markets evolve, NSE's entrenched position and diversified revenue streams make it a central player in the country’s financialisation journey. The exchange’s integrated technology systems and extensive product suite provide a competitive advantage in a market expected to grow strongly over the coming years.
