Vodafone Idea Shares Surge After 6x Subscription in Rs 18,000 Cr FPO

Shares of Vodafone Idea climbed 12 percent on April 23, a day after the company's follow-on public offer (FPO) closed with a subscription rate exceeding six times. Investors placed bids for 8,011.8 crore equity shares, well above the 1,260 crore shares offered in the Rs 18,000 crore FPO, marking one of the largest fundraisings in the Indian telecom sector.

Vodafone Idea, the country's third-largest telecom operator, is executing this capital raise as part of a broader Rs 45,000 crore funding plan intended to strengthen its competitive stance against dominant players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. The FPO attracted strong institutional support, with prominent investors including Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and GQG Partners subscribing via the anchor book at the upper price band of Rs 11 per share, contributing Rs 5,400 crore.

The proceeds from this offering will be primarily allocated towards upgrading and expanding network infrastructure. Specifically, Vodafone Idea plans to invest Rs 12,750 crore in deploying new 4G and 5G base stations and enhancing the capacity of existing 4G sites. This investment aims to improve service quality and coverage, which is critical as the telecom industry moves towards next-generation technologies.

Market analysts have welcomed the successful tranche of the capital raise. Ambit Capital highlighted that the completion of this first phase positions Vodafone Idea well to secure the full Rs 45,000 crore through a combination of government support, anchor investors, and qualified institutional buyers. The Indian government currently holds a stake of just over 32 percent in the company, underscoring its vested interest in the telco’s revival.

In addition to the fundraising, the return of industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla to Vodafone Idea’s board is seen as a positive development. Ambit Capital noted that this leadership change, coupled with the fresh equity infusion, may encourage lending from banks. Increased credit availability could further assist Vodafone Idea in expanding its network and rolling out 5G services, potentially elevating its market position.

Brokerage firm IIFL Securities recently raised its price target for Vodafone Idea shares to Rs 14, a level the stock surpassed during intraday trading on April 23. IIFL anticipates tariff increases across the telecom sector over the next three years, which could enhance revenue streams for all operators. The Rs 45,000 crore funding is expected to slow subscriber attrition and accelerate the migration of 2G users to higher-speed 4G services.

However, some analysts urge caution. Kotak Securities pointed out that despite the capital raise and possible tariff hikes, Vodafone Idea’s cash earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of Rs 8,300 crore may still not be sufficient to cover the substantial annual government dues. The conversion of these dues into equity could reduce Vodafone Idea’s financial strain but would result in significant equity dilution, negatively impacting current shareholders.

Vodafone Idea’s journey reflects the challenges faced by telecom operators in a highly competitive and capital-intensive market. The company’s efforts to secure substantial funding and enhance infrastructure come amid ongoing industry consolidation and evolving consumer demands. As 5G adoption accelerates in India, the ability to invest in network upgrades will be crucial for maintaining relevance and market share.

Investors and market watchers will be closely monitoring Vodafone Idea’s next steps, including the allotment of shares and the eventual listing of the new equity. The outcome will offer insights into the company’s financial health and its capacity to compete with larger rivals.
