Bosch Home Comfort Targets Double-Digit Market Share in India AC Sector

Bosch Home Comfort Group, a major player in the heating and cooling industry and part of the German engineering giant Bosch GmbH, is making significant moves to expand its presence in the Indian air conditioning market. The company announced plans to launch Bosch-branded air conditioners in India by next year and aims to capture a strong double-digit share of the market within two years. The Managing Director, Sanjay Sudhakaran, shared the company’s ambitions to rank among the top five AC brands in India over the medium term.

This expansion follows Bosch Home Comfort's strategic acquisition of the global residential and light-commercial air conditioning business of Johnson Controls and Hitachi in August 2025. The acquisition forms the foundation of a dual-brand approach designed to address different segments of the Indian market. According to Sudhakaran, Hitachi will focus on the mainstream and mass-premium segments, while Bosch will cater to the performance-premium and super-premium categories. This segmentation allows the company to reach diverse consumer groups effectively.

To reinforce its commitment to India, Bosch Home Comfort plans to invest roughly €80 million (around ₹900 crore) over the next few years. This investment will enhance manufacturing capacity, boost localisation efforts, and strengthen engineering and testing capabilities. The company has already taken over Hitachi's air conditioning operations in India and intends to revamp its product portfolio to better serve the rapidly growing mainstream and mass-premium customer base.

The upcoming Bosch-branded air conditioners will target the niche performance-premium market, competing with established players such as O General and Mitsubishi Electric. These units are expected to be priced at ₹45,000 to ₹50,000 and above. Sudhakaran emphasized that the two brands will maintain distinct product lines, features, and value propositions. Bosch will lean on its German engineering legacy and premium positioning, while Hitachi will continue leveraging its reputation as an air conditioning specialist rooted in Japanese engineering excellence.

India's air conditioning market presents significant growth opportunities due to relatively low penetration rates, rising disposable incomes, and the country's expanding economy. Sudhakaran described the Indian market as a "tremendous runway for growth" and indicated Bosch’s intention to grow faster than the overall market across all categories.

The planned investment will also support Bosch Home Comfort’s expansion into light-commercial air conditioning products, including variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems under the Hitachi brand. Manufacturing of the latest Hitachi VRF products is underway at the company’s facility in Kadi, Gujarat, which currently has an annual production capacity exceeding one million units. Additionally, the global research and development center in Ahmedabad has been expanded to focus on light-commercial AC technologies.

While the company is considering the possibility of establishing a new manufacturing site in southern India, Sudhakaran did not confirm any specific plans. Nevertheless, localisation remains a core pillar of Bosch Home Comfort’s strategy. Approximately 75 percent of its procurement comes from domestic suppliers, with the remaining 25 percent imported due to unavailability within India. The Kadi plant is highly integrated, producing components such as heat exchangers, condensing units, tubing, coils, and sheet metal parts in-house.

The company benefits from a joint venture with a global compressor manufacturer that operates a plant in Ahmedabad, securing a steady supply of compressors for its AC units. Bosch Home Comfort follows a philosophy of growth aligned with market demand, carefully managing its capital expenditures to maintain cost competitiveness.

On the distribution front, Bosch Home Comfort plans to utilize the existing Hitachi network across India for sales and service, while also tapping into Bosch’s consumer appliances retail channels. This dual approach aims to maximize reach through large-format stores, regional retailers, and online platforms. The company expects to gain synergies in sales, service, manufacturing, research and development, supply chain, and human resources by managing both brands under one umbrella.

Globally, Bosch Home Comfort Group manages a diverse portfolio including brands such as Bosch, Hitachi, York, and Buderus, covering heating, cooling, and comfort solutions. Its focused expansion in India reflects the company’s confidence in the country’s growing demand for air conditioning products and the potential for substantial market share gains.
