Jio Platforms’ IPO Sets New Records, Distinct from Reliance Power’s Past

Jio Platforms recently made headlines by launching the largest initial public offering (IPO) ever seen in the Indian stock market, raising an impressive ₹30,213 crore. This milestone surpassed the previous record held by Hyundai Motor India, whose IPO raised ₹27,806 crore. The shares debuted at ₹1,358 on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), marking a 21.36 percent increase above the issue price of ₹1,119. This listing gain stands out among mega-IPOs, with only LG Electronics India showing a higher return of 50 percent on its debut.

Following the successful listing, Jio Platforms joined the elite club of companies valued at over $100 billion. It became the second-most valuable entity in the Indian market, trailing only its parent company, Reliance Industries. The combined market capitalization of the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance group surged to approximately ₹30 lakh crore, surpassing the Tata group, which is valued around ₹25 lakh crore. The IPO saw an overwhelming response, with bids totaling ₹7.4 lakh crore and a record-breaking 1.34 crore applications within just one hour.

Observers could not help but draw parallels between the Jio Platforms IPO and the Reliance Power (RPower) IPO from nearly two decades ago. Reliance Power’s IPO in February 2008 had been the largest in its time, raising ₹11,563 crore and attracting bids exceeding ₹7 lakh crore. It was subscribed over 72 times, making it one of the most eagerly awaited listings in Indian market history. Both companies share a connection through the Dhirubhai Ambani family and operate within sectors perceived to have significant growth potential.

Despite these similarities, the outcomes for the two companies have been markedly different. Reliance Power’s shares opened at ₹538 per share, a 19 percent premium to its IPO price, but this initial enthusiasm was short-lived. The stock swiftly dropped to ₹355 within minutes and closed the day at ₹372.50, wiping out substantial investor wealth. Since then, Reliance Power’s shares have never traded above their ₹450 IPO price, with the brief post-listing peak remaining unmatched.

One of the critical distinctions lies in valuation. Jio Platforms was priced at a more reasonable multiple of about 33 times earnings. In contrast, Reliance Power’s valuation was exorbitant, exceeding 11,250 times earnings, which raised concerns about sustainability. After the sharp fall in Reliance Power’s stock price, the company attempted to stabilize investor sentiment by announcing a 3:5 bonus issue for shareholders outside the promoter group. It also lodged complaints alleging market manipulation, though regulators found no evidence to support these claims. These reactions were seen as signs of distress, further eroding confidence.

In contrast, the management of Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms’ parent company, has demonstrated steady leadership. Despite some stock price stagnation over the past five years and a decline of more than 20 percent in the last year, the company has maintained investor trust. Jio Financial Services, a related entity, has experienced a drop of over 30 percent during the same period, but this has not dampened overall confidence.

Adding to Reliance’s stature, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently visited the company’s Jamnagar refinery complex. Discussions included plans to expand India’s imports of Venezuelan oil, which are now subject to US regulations. Mukesh Ambani’s influence has grown significantly, with global figures like Elon Musk publicly acknowledging Ambani’s dominance in India’s business landscape. Musk referred to Ambani as the “real boss of India” and suggested that Jio Platforms was actively working to limit Starlink’s market entry.

These developments signify that Mukesh Ambani’s enterprises operate on a far different trajectory than Reliance Power, which suffered from overvaluation and market setbacks. Jio Platforms’ record-breaking IPO and sustained market strength indicate a robust investor outlook and solid fundamentals. Consequently, the fate that befell Reliance Power appears unlikely to repeat for Jio Platforms or the broader Reliance group.
