Nasdaq Hits Record High as Tech Stocks Soar and Oil Prices Fall
The Nasdaq Composite reached an all-time closing high on Monday, driven by strong performances from leading technology companies such as Nvidia and Microsoft. This rally reflects investor optimism ahead of the upcoming quarterly earnings season, even as oil prices declined due to increased crude supply from the Middle East and support from the Group of Seven nations.
Preliminary figures showed the S&P 500 advancing by 51.50 points, or 0.67 percent, to 7,774.22 points. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 289.42 points, or 1.06 percent, closing at 27,480.28. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 94.59 points, or 0.18 percent, finishing at 51,274.32.
This marks the Nasdaq's second consecutive day of notable gains following the release of weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs data on Friday. The softer employment report reduced market speculation about a Federal Reserve interest rate increase in the near term.
Technology giants Nvidia and Microsoft were among the top contributors to the Nasdaq's rise. Other major technology companies including Meta Platforms and Tesla also saw their stock prices increase, reflecting continued investor interest in the sector.
On the commodities front, oil prices experienced a decline. This drop is linked to a rise in crude oil exports from the Middle East, combined with an agreement among the Group of Seven countries to increase supply. These developments helped ease concerns about energy costs, which had been a factor weighing on markets.
Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth, commented on the market environment, stating, "With the economic data calendar being light and earnings about a week away, investors are really searching for any positive signals, and clearly they are focusing on lower energy prices." This cautious optimism reflects the market's anticipation of upcoming corporate earnings reports, which are expected to provide clearer insight into economic conditions.
The third-quarter earnings season is set to begin next week, with major U.S. banks scheduled to release their results. Analysts expect a significant year-over-year increase in earnings for the companies in the S&P 500. According to data from LSEG, average earnings growth is projected to surpass 30 percent, largely fueled by strong performance in AI-related technology stocks.
The latest labor market data from Friday revealed a slowdown in U.S. job growth during September, which has influenced expectations around Federal Reserve monetary policy. The probability of a rate hike at the Fed's October meeting has dropped to 24 percent, a steep decline from 70 percent just one week earlier, based on the CME's FedWatch tool.
In corporate news, PTC shares surged following the announcement that Schneider Electric of France will acquire the software company in an all-cash transaction valued at $22.6 billion. This deal highlights ongoing consolidation in the technology and industrial sectors.
The Nasdaq's previous record closing level was established on September 22, underscoring the recent upward momentum in the index. The strong outlook for corporate earnings has helped U.S. stocks outperform many international markets over the past six months, despite headwinds such as rising Treasury yields and elevated oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions.
Additional market activity included a notable jump in RXO shares after freight forwarding firm C.H. Robinson Worldwide agreed to acquire the transportation broker in a stock-and-cash deal worth $5.8 billion. However, shares of C.H. Robinson declined following the announcement.
Cerebras Systems also saw gains after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the chip designer as a "close partner," emphasizing their ongoing collaboration to advance computing speed at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence development.
The current market environment reflects a complex mix of factors, including technological innovation, energy market shifts, and evolving monetary policy expectations. Investors appear cautiously optimistic as they await detailed earnings reports that will offer further clarity on the economic outlook heading into the final quarter of the year.
