Analysts Spot Trend Reversal in Havells India, NTPC, and Birlasoft Stocks
Indian equity markets have recently experienced a notable bounce after a prolonged period of decline. This recovery stems mainly from strong second-quarter earnings reports from key IT companies and certain banking institutions. Despite this uplift, analysts remain cautious due to rising crude oil prices, which could pose challenges for market sentiment moving forward.
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, attributes the Nifty's upward movement last week to robust financial results posted by major banks and IT firms that exceeded expectations. He notes that the preference for large-cap stocks over mid- and small-cap shares is reasonable in the current environment and expects this trend to continue.
However, Vijayakumar warns that escalating geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and a surge in Brent crude oil prices to $109 per barrel could act as significant obstacles for equity markets.
In October so far, the benchmark Nifty index and the broader Nifty 500 have reversed losses sustained over the previous two months, gaining approximately 2 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively. IT stocks have been among the strongest performers within the Nifty 500, with Tata Elxsi climbing nearly 25 percent this month alone.
Within this context, Sachin Gupta, Vice President of Research at Choice Broking, has identified three stocks showing potential signs of trend reversals based on technical chart analysis: Havells India, Birlasoft, and NTPC. While Birlasoft and Havells India have recorded gains of 18 percent and 12 percent respectively in October, NTPC has experienced a 5 percent decline.
Birlasoft is currently trading at ₹316. Gupta highlights that the stock may have found support between ₹266 and ₹270, near its lower Bollinger Band, suggesting a base for recovery. Weekly charts reveal that Birlasoft has broken out of a Falling Wedge pattern with strong volume, moving above its 20-week exponential moving average (EMA). This breakout signals a possible improvement in short-term momentum. According to Gupta, a sustained rise above ₹330 could open the door for Birlasoft to reach levels between ₹360 and ₹400. Conversely, a drop below ₹266 would be a critical downside risk.
Havells India, priced at ₹1,108, appears to be rebounding after bouncing off a key support zone between ₹1,000 and ₹1,020, which served as a base in December 2022. The stock has moved past the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement level at ₹1,082.10, indicating a potential improvement in its price trend. Despite this, Gupta cautions that the overall weekly trend remains weak as Havells continues to trade below both its 50-week EMA (₹1,265) and 200-week EMA (₹1,358). A sustained move above ₹1,265 could push the stock higher toward ₹1,300 to ₹1,360, while a decline below ₹1,015 might drag it down to around ₹850.
NTPC is currently trading at ₹314 and is positioned near its 200-week EMA at ₹307, a significant long-term support level. Gupta points out early indications of a possible reversal on the weekly chart. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has bounced back from oversold levels to approximately 34, and the stock's proximity to the lower Bollinger Band combined with increased trading volume suggests emerging buying interest. Immediate support is seen at ₹296, and holding this level could help NTPC move higher toward ₹340 and ₹360 in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, confirming this reversal will require a sustained move above resistance levels, as per Gupta’s analysis.
This analysis comes amid broader market movements where investors are weighing the impact of corporate earnings against macroeconomic factors like oil prices and geopolitical tensions. The recent rally in IT and banking sectors has helped stabilize indices, but challenges remain in sustaining momentum across other segments.
Investors and market watchers often rely on technical analysis to identify potential turning points in stock prices. Patterns such as the Falling Wedge and key moving averages like the EMA provide insights into possible trend shifts. The stocks highlighted by Gupta—Havells India, Birlasoft, and NTPC—are examples where chart patterns may signal renewed investor confidence or cautious recovery phases.
As the market navigates these mixed signals, keeping an eye on geopolitical developments and commodity prices will be crucial. Stocks that demonstrate technical strength may offer opportunities, but risk management remains essential given the uncertain external factors.
Overall, while October has seen some positive movements in the Indian stock market, the interplay of earnings results, technical patterns, and global events will determine the sustainability of this recovery.
