Market Outlook for April 24: Key Levels, Stock Trends, and Options Data

Heading into April 24, Indian equity markets show signs of cautious optimism with key indices maintaining upward momentum amid reduced volatility. The Nifty 50 index recently touched resistance near the 22,400 level, coinciding with the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement, and experts anticipate it may soon challenge the 22,500 mark.

After three consecutive sessions of gains, April 23 saw the benchmark indices face some profit booking. The BSE Sensex edged higher by 90 points to close at 73,738, while the Nifty 50 ended at 22,368, up by 32 points. Despite the gains, the daily candlestick patterns hinted at some selling pressure as the closing prices fell below the opening levels.

Technical analyst Om Mehra of Samco Securities noted, "A minor resistance is expected at the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement near 22,400 on the Nifty. Once overcome, the index could rally toward 22,500-22,600." He added that the relative strength index (RSI) remains steady around the 50 mark, indicating a balanced momentum, with immediate support at 22,250. Mehra sees any short-term pullbacks as buying opportunities.

Options market activity supports this outlook. The 22,400-22,500 range is seen as a significant hurdle due to high open interest, while the index’s support levels lie at 22,200 and further down near 22,000, according to Ruchit Jain, lead researcher at 5paisa.com.

The overall market breadth favored advancing stocks, with three advancing shares for every two decliners on the NSE. Meanwhile, the India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, dropped nearly 20 percent to 10.2, marking its lowest point in nine months and easing concerns among investors.

For Bank Nifty, the session on April 23 was marked by volatility. The index opened positively but saw selling pressure at elevated levels before finishing 46 points higher at 47,970. Despite this bearish candlestick formation, senior analyst Kunal Shah from LKP Securities remains optimistic. He highlighted strong support around 47,700 to 47,800 and suggested dips offer buying chances. The immediate resistance zone is between 48,200 and 48,500, and a break above this could propel the index to new record highs.

Pivot point analysis indicates resistance levels for Bank Nifty at 48,212, 48,307, and 48,461, with support expected near 47,903, 47,808, and 47,654.

In the options segment, the highest call open interest for the Nifty was at the 23,000 strike with 12.2 million contracts, followed by 22,500 and 22,400 strikes. Notably, there was significant call option writing at the 22,400 strike, adding 3.5 million contracts, suggesting traders expect resistance here. Conversely, call unwinding occurred mainly at the 22,000 strike.

On the put side, the 22,000 strike held the most open interest, indicating a strong support level with over 8.8 million contracts. Put option writing was concentrated at 22,100, 22,400, and 21,500 strikes, while notable put unwinding was observed at 21,300 and 22,000 strikes.

Looking at individual stocks, high delivery percentages reflect strong investor interest. Vodafone Idea, Balkrishna Industries, Pidilite Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and PI Industries topped the list among futures and options stocks.

Open interest trends showed 44 stocks experiencing a build-up of long positions, including Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, Gujarat Gas, Bharti Airtel, Eicher Motors, and Jubilant Foodworks. Conversely, 40 stocks showed long unwinding, such as Exide Industries, Hindustan Copper, Hindalco Industries, Dr Lal PathLabs, and Punjab National Bank.

Among short positions, 26 stocks recorded short build-up, including Can Fin Homes, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Birlasoft, and ABB India. Meanwhile, 74 stocks were undergoing short covering, a process where traders buy back shares to close short positions, including Vodafone Idea, IndiaMART InterMESH, Biocon, Page Industries, and Sun TV Network.

The Nifty Put Call Ratio (PCR), a market sentiment indicator, dropped to 1.06 on April 23 from 1.14 the previous day. A PCR above 0.7 typically signals bullish tendencies as more puts are sold relative to calls, whereas a decline toward 0.5 suggests increasing bearishness.

In corporate news, Tata Consumer Products reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 268 crore for the quarter ending March FY24, down 23 percent year-on-year due to a Rs 216 crore exceptional loss, despite a 9 percent rise in revenue to Rs 3,927 crore. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance posted a 26 percent decline in profit after tax to Rs 174 crore for the same period, with the value of new business also dropping by 26.4 percent. Tata Elxsi saw a 4.6 percent decrease in net profit to Rs 196.9 crore, alongside a slight revenue decline.

These figures reflect the mixed environment companies are navigating amid broader market uncertainties and shifting economic conditions.

As traders prepare for the sessions ahead, understanding these technical levels, options data, and stock trends will be essential for making informed investment decisions.
