Indian Markets Rally as Volatility Drops, India VIX Hits 4-Year Low
On April 23, 2024, Indian equity markets showed positive momentum as the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty advanced amid easing volatility. The rally was driven primarily by strong performance in the real estate sector, contributing to a broad-based market uptrend.
By midday, the Sensex climbed 263.09 points, or 0.36 percent, reaching 73,911.71, while the Nifty added 83.80 points, or 0.38 percent, settling at 22,420.20. Market breadth remained favorable with approximately 2,155 shares gaining, compared to 1,039 that declined, and 82 remaining unchanged. The broader market indices outperformed the main benchmarks, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices each rising by up to 0.9 percent.
A notable development was the sharp decline in the India VIX, a key measure of market volatility. The index dropped nearly 19 percent, marking its steepest fall since May 2019. This reduction in volatility suggests growing investor confidence and a calmer trading environment after recent fluctuations.
The real estate sector led sectoral gains for the day. The Nifty Realty index outperformed other sectors, boosted by positive movements in stocks such as DLF, Macrotech Developers, Godrej Properties, and Phoenix Mills. This sector-specific strength helped sustain the overall market rally.
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, commented on the market dynamics, explaining that despite external challenges like elevated US bond yields—where the 10-year yield remains above 4.6 percent—and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the underlying bullish trend in Indian equities remains intact. He highlighted that foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling pressure triggered by high US yields is being offset by aggressive domestic institutional investor (DII) buying, which is maintaining market stability.
From a technical standpoint, Deven Mehata, Research Analyst at Choice Broking, expects the Nifty index to find immediate support near 22,300 points, with further support levels at 22,200 and 22,150. On the upside, resistance is anticipated around 22,450, followed by 22,500 and 22,550 points. This technical outlook suggests a cautious but optimistic near-term market trajectory.
Among individual stocks, Bharti Airtel, Grasim Industries, and HCL Technologies were notable gainers on the Nifty, contributing significantly to the indices’ rise. Conversely, Sun Pharma, HDFC Life, and Tata Consumer Products lagged behind, showing some sectoral divergence.
On the Sensex front, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, and State Bank of India led the gains, while Sun Pharma, Reliance Industries, and Mahindra & Mahindra saw relatively weaker performance.
Several stocks made headlines due to significant movements. PSP Projects’ shares increased by around 4 percent following the announcement of a qualified institutions placement (QIP) aimed at raising Rs 244 crore. Meanwhile, Tejas Networks hit its 20 percent upper circuit limit after reporting strong quarterly earnings for the period ending March 2024, surpassing revenue and margin expectations. Hatsun Agro Products also experienced a sharp jump of 11 percent in early trading after its net profit doubled year-on-year to Rs 52 crore in the January-March quarter.
These developments reflect a market environment where positive corporate earnings and strategic fund-raising activities are contributing to investor enthusiasm. The combination of reduced volatility and sector-specific rallies underscores a cautiously optimistic mood among market participants.
Investors should continue to monitor global economic indicators, including US bond yields and geopolitical developments, as these factors can influence market sentiment in India. Domestic institutional buying appears to be playing a stabilizing role amid these external pressures.
For those following the Indian stock market, the current trend suggests a period of consolidation with selective opportunities in sectors such as real estate and technology. Adopting a balanced investment approach, considering both fundamental and technical factors, may help in navigating the market’s near-term movements.
