Sensex and Nifty Rise for Third Day Amid Corporate Earnings and Global Strength
On April 23, 2024, India's key stock indices, the Sensex and Nifty, continued their upward trajectory for the third consecutive day, buoyed by positive global market trends and advancing corporate earnings reports. The Sensex climbed 190.02 points, or 0.26 percent, reaching 73,838.64, while the Nifty rose 53.40 points, or 0.24 percent, to 22,389.80 during morning trading.
Market breadth favored the bulls, with 1,963 shares gaining ground compared to 833 that fell and 94 remaining unchanged. The BSE Smallcap index outperformed the broader market by rising 0.6 percent in the first hour of trading, reflecting investor interest in smaller companies amid the earnings season.
Volatility, as measured by the India VIX, saw a significant decline of 18 percent to 10.42, marking its lowest level this year. This drop indicates reduced near-term uncertainty among traders.
Despite the positive momentum, analysts urge caution due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and the upcoming general elections, factors that could cause market fluctuations. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, advises investors to focus on fairly valued large-cap stocks. He notes that while the broader market faces high valuations, the bullish sentiment is likely to persist in the short term, with domestic buying expected to offset foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling pressure.
Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research at HDFC Securities, expects the Nifty to trade within a range of 22,213 to 22,504 in the near term. He observes that the Nifty has likely reversed its previous downward trend and is positioned for further gains.
Sector analysis shows mixed performance. The Nifty Metal index was the only sector to record losses, while all other sectors moved higher. The Nifty Realty index led the gainers, surging over 2 percent. Key contributors to this rally included DLF, Macrotech Developers, Godrej Properties, and Phoenix Mills, signaling strength in the real estate segment.
Global markets also supported the positive domestic sentiment. On April 22, major US indices ended higher, with the Dow Jones, NASDAQ Composite, and S&P 500 each gaining up to 1 percent. This rise was fueled by investors purchasing technology stocks following recent dips. Market participants are closely watching earnings reports from major technology companies, starting with Tesla on April 23, followed by Meta, Alphabet, and Microsoft later in the week.
Asia-Pacific markets mirrored the upward trend seen in the US. Japan's Nikkei 225 edged up 0.1 percent, Australia's S&P 200 increased by 0.4 percent, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.9 percent during their early sessions on April 23.
With earnings season underway and global markets showing resilience, investors remain attentive to stock-specific developments and broader economic indicators. The combination of strong corporate results and cautious optimism on geopolitical fronts will likely shape market movements in the coming weeks.
Investors are encouraged to follow market updates closely and consider expert advice when making investment decisions. Reliable information and timely analysis remain crucial as the Indian stock market navigates the complexities of domestic and international factors.
