On Monday morning, militants ambushed a group of Meitei villagers in Manipur, resulting in the deaths of three men and injuries to others. The attack occurred in the Sunurok hills area under the Sagolmang Police Station jurisdiction in Kangpokpi district, where 14 Meitei men were cutting and transporting firewood at the time.

According to Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), unidentified militants opened fire around 9:40 am, targeting the group in a sudden assault. Three men lost their lives during the incident, and three others were wounded. The remaining villagers managed to escape unharmed.

This violent episode exacerbates the already tense situation in Manipur, a state that has been grappling with ethnic clashes since May 2023. The Meitei community, one of the prominent groups in the region, has been frequently involved in conflicts with other ethnic populations, leading to repeated cycles of violence and unrest.

Following the attack, local residents organized protests, carrying the bodies of the deceased men to the residence of Manipur's Chief Minister, Y Khemchand Singh. The demonstration escalated as police resorted to firing tear gas shells in an attempt to disperse the crowd. The unrest underscores the deep frustration and fear among the community amid ongoing security concerns.

In response to the incident, security forces launched a combing operation in the Sunurok hills to track down the militants responsible for the attack. Chief Minister Singh promptly instructed officials to reinforce security protocols in areas identified as vulnerable to such acts of violence, emphasizing the need to restore peace and safeguard residents.

The opposition Congress party reacted strongly to the developments, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Singh. Party leaders criticized the government's handling of the law and order situation, arguing that repeated attacks have left the people feeling unprotected and abandoned by the authorities.

Manipur's ethnic strife has roots in longstanding disputes over land, identity, and political representation among various communities. The state has witnessed periodic outbreaks of violence, often resulting in loss of life and displacement. These conflicts have complicated efforts by local and central governments to maintain stability and promote development in the region.

The recent attack in Kangpokpi highlights the challenges faced by security agencies working to contain militant activities that fuel ethnic tensions. The ambush on the Meitei villagers involved in everyday tasks like collecting firewood demonstrates the risks ordinary citizens face amid the unrest.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, aiming to prevent further violence and address the grievances of affected communities. Enhanced coordination between security forces and local leaders is critical in fostering dialogue and reducing hostility in Manipur's diverse social fabric.

As investigations proceed, the government faces mounting pressure to deliver effective solutions that ensure safety for all residents. The events of Monday serve as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in resolving ethnic conflicts and the urgent need for sustained peacebuilding efforts in Manipur.
