Sensex Drops 500 Points as Jio IPO Sees Strong Subscription on Day Two
The Indian stock market experienced a notable decline on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as the Sensex dropped by more than 450 points by early afternoon trading. Investors remained cautious due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which raised concerns about potential disruptions in global supply chains. At 2:00 PM, the Sensex stood at 73,251.58, down 458.11 points or 0.62 percent. The broader Nifty50 index also fell, declining 172.55 points or 0.76 percent to 22,638.80.
Among the major contributors to the downturn were Power Grid Corporation, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Nestle India, which registered significant losses within the Nifty50. The negative trend extended beyond the primary indices, as the Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices dropped by 1.04 percent and 0.91 percent, respectively.
Sector-wise analysis revealed that the Nifty Chemical, Nifty Auto, and Nifty Metal sectors underperformed in line with the overall market decline. Conversely, the Nifty index managed to outperform these sectors, although it still moved lower on the day.
In the corporate earnings space, a number of companies are preparing to release their second-quarter financial results on Monday. These include notable names such as Adani Energy Solutions, Adani Total Gas, BlueStone Jewellery and Lifestyle, Chennai Petroleum Corporation, Colgate-Palmolive (India), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Jindal Stainless, Mahindra Lifespace Developers, and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra), among others. Investors will be closely monitoring these reports for insights into the health of various industries amid current economic conditions.
Thursday's trading session also saw Lupin, SRF, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Maruti Suzuki India, and NTPC shares hit their 52-week lows. Market watchers attributed these declines to a combination of sector-specific challenges and overall market volatility.
Amid the market downturn, the initial public offering (IPO) of Jio Platforms continued to attract strong investor interest. On the second day of subscription, the IPO was oversubscribed by 4.3 times, reflecting robust demand. Breaking down the subscription figures, Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) led with a 9.78 times subscription, Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs) contributed with 4.09 times, and Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) subscribed at a rate of 1.39 times.
Earlier in the day, at 1:00 PM, the Sensex had already fallen by 291.23 points (0.4 percent) to 73,418.46, and the Nifty50 was down 100.25 points (0.44 percent) at 22,711.10. These movements indicated sustained selling pressure throughout the session.
Among individual stocks, Mahindra and Mahindra Financial Services shares dropped sharply by nearly 10 percent to ₹268.25 on the National Stock Exchange, reflecting broader market weakness. Similarly, Garware Hi-Tech shares fell almost 14 percent despite reporting a 42 percent year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit, showcasing the disconnect between earnings results and market sentiment.
On the positive side, Paisalo Digital reported a 27.4 percent year-on-year increase in net profit, reaching ₹65.6 crore in the September quarter (Q2FY27). However, this did not significantly reverse the overall market downtrend.
New listings also gained attention, with Fusion CX debuting on the NSE at ₹305 per share, marking a 5.54 percent premium over its issue price of ₹292. Despite this, most Information Technology stocks, including Tech Mahindra, MphasiS, and Persistent Systems, experienced declines during the session.
Market participants are closely watching developments in West Asia, given their potential to impact crude oil supplies and global economic stability. These geopolitical concerns, combined with upcoming corporate earnings and IPO activity, continue to influence investor sentiment in India's equity markets.
The stock market remains sensitive to external and domestic factors alike, with the current environment underscoring the importance of monitoring both macroeconomic events and company-specific news. The strong subscription levels for the Jio Platforms IPO highlight investor appetite for high-profile offerings, even as broader market indices face headwinds. This dynamic illustrates the complex interplay between market optimism for growth opportunities and caution amid geopolitical uncertainties.
