Asian Stock Markets Observe Multiple Holidays Next Week, Impacting Trading
Next week’s trading across major Asian stock markets will be affected by a series of holidays, causing several exchanges to shut down on different days between September 28 and October 2. These closures are due to national and regional observances and are expected to result in lighter trading volumes in several parts of the region.
For investors in India and those monitoring global market trends, the important dates to note include September 28, when Taiwan’s stock market will be closed, and October 1 and 2, when China, Hong Kong, and India will observe respective holidays. The Shanghai Stock Exchange has officially announced that its National Day holiday will start on October 1.
Taiwan Stock Market Closure
The Taiwan Stock Exchange will not operate on Monday, September 28, in observance of Teacher’s Day. This follows a prior closure on September 25 for the Mid-Autumn Festival, resulting in four non-trading sessions with the weekend in between. This sequence of holidays means investors should expect limited activity from Taiwan during this period. Taiwan’s market will reopen on Tuesday, September 29, with trading hours from 6:30 am to 11 am Indian Standard Time (IST).
China’s Extended National Day Holiday
Both the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange will be closed on Thursday, October 1, and Friday, October 2, due to China’s National Day celebrations. The holiday break extends beyond these two days; the Shanghai exchange will remain closed through October 7, resuming trading on October 8. The Shanghai Stock Exchange’s regular trading hours run from 7:00 am to 12:30 pm IST, Monday to Friday. This week’s holiday period may influence investor decisions and trading volumes as market participants prepare for the extended shutdown.
Hong Kong Market Holiday
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange will observe a holiday on October 1 in recognition of National Day. Unlike mainland China’s longer closure, Hong Kong will close only for that single day. This coincides with the start of China’s extended National Day holiday, meaning markets in both the mainland and Hong Kong will be closed simultaneously on October 1. Trading on the Hang Seng Index, which tracks the Hong Kong exchange, will resume on October 2. The Hang Seng trades from 7:00 am to 1:30 pm IST on weekdays.
India’s Market Closure for Gandhi Jayanti
India’s National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed on Friday, October 2, in observance of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. This creates a three-day trading pause over the weekend for Indian equity markets. Investors should be mindful of this gap when assessing global market movements, as Indian markets will be inactive while other regions may continue trading.
Market Activity and Investor Sentiment
The series of holidays across key Asian markets next week will likely lead to subdued trading volumes and could affect market liquidity. Investors tracking global equities should be aware of these closures to better understand market dynamics and potential price movements during these periods.
On the previous Friday, domestic Indian equity markets showed resilience by recovering from an earlier decline. The Nifty 50 index rose by 77.40 points or 0.34% to close at 23,140.50, while the BSE Sensex gained 315.20 points or 0.43%, settling at 73,895.74. Despite these gains, investor caution remained due to high crude oil prices, US Treasury yields exceeding 5%, and ongoing foreign investor selling pressure in Indian equities.
Elsewhere in Asia, markets delivered mixed results on Friday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 1.22% to close at 66,320, while Singapore’s Straits Times index increased by 0.49% to end at 5,711. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 1.21% to finish at 24,465, and markets in Taiwan and South Korea were closed in observance of holidays.
With multiple key markets taking breaks next week, investors should keep a close eye on developments in open markets and global economic indicators to inform their trading strategies.
