This agreement builds upon a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2026. It represents a significant step forward in the strategic alliance between the two automotive leaders, leveraging each other's strengths in product technology and engineering.

Under the terms of the agreement, TMPV will grant Stellantis access to its advanced vehicle architectures and product technologies. Stellantis will then apply its development and engineering expertise, particularly in India, to tailor vehicles that meet the diverse needs of global customers, including varying regulatory and operational standards.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director and chief executive officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, emphasized the value of the partnership, which has been nurtured over more than 20 years. He stated, "Our collaboration with Stellantis has grown steadily, founded on mutual trust and complementary strengths. This Agreement marks an important next step, extending our relationship into advanced vehicle technology and architecture, reflecting the strength and competitiveness of TMPV’s capabilities in these areas." He added that the joint effort will enable the creation of compelling vehicles engineered and built in India for both domestic and international customers.

Vehicles developed through this collaboration will be produced at Fiat India Automobiles Pvt Ltd (FIAPL), a 50:50 joint venture between TMPV and Stellantis. This production strategy aligns with the companies’ goals to capitalize on India's engineering expertise and manufacturing scale.

The formal agreement transforms the intentions outlined in the earlier MoU into actionable cooperation focused on product technology and vehicle architecture. By combining resources, the partners aim to boost export ambitions and reinforce India's role as a critical hub within the global automotive production network.

Tianshu Xin, chief operating officer of Stellantis Asia-Pacific Region, highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships for value creation in the region. "By combining Tata Motors' strong capabilities in India with Stellantis' global product development and market reach, this Agreement will help us develop competitive vehicles in India and expand our export potential across international markets," Xin said. He also noted that this collaboration strengthens India's position as a strategic manufacturing and development center for Stellantis.

Stellantis holds a portfolio of 14 well-known automotive brands with a broad presence in Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. This global expertise, combined with Tata Motors' technology strengths, provides a solid foundation for developing and manufacturing vehicles aimed at markets worldwide.

The partnership signals a broader trend in the automotive industry, where collaborations between global and regional players are becoming essential to meet evolving customer demands and regulatory requirements. India’s role as a manufacturing and engineering hub continues to grow, driven by competitive costs, skilled workforce availability, and supportive policies.

As the automotive market shifts towards advanced technologies and electrification, alliances like the one between Stellantis and Tata Motors play a vital role in accelerating innovation and expanding global reach. This expanded partnership is expected to deliver new products that combine advanced technology with cost-effective manufacturing, benefiting consumers across numerous international markets.
