This collaboration aims to build indigenous capabilities in precision-guided artillery ammunition, supporting key Indian military programs by developing, integrating, and localizing advanced defence technologies. Precision-guided artillery is a growing area of interest globally, as it enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of artillery fire by allowing projectiles to adjust their trajectory mid-flight.

Course-correction technology plays a crucial role in modern warfare, enabling artillery shells to hit targets more precisely, thereby reducing collateral damage and improving mission success rates. By cultivating domestic expertise in this domain, India hopes to reduce its reliance on imported defence solutions, boosting self-sufficiency within its defence technology sector.

Under the terms of the MoU, Sigma Advanced Systems will facilitate technology transfer, qualification processes, local manufacturing, and integration of advanced course-correction solutions within India. The program will leverage the Course Correction Guidance Kit, a mature technology currently in use by international clientele, as a foundation for this collaboration.

The initiative represents a significant step for Sigma as it moves beyond precision engineering and subsystem manufacturing toward the development and integration of full advanced defence systems. This shift aims to merge global technology expertise with domestic manufacturing and engineering strengths to meet the specific needs of the Indian Armed Forces.

Sunil Kalidindi, CEO of Sigma Advanced Systems, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, "The collaboration with Munitions India Limited marks an important step in advancing indigenous precision-guided artillery capabilities in India." He explained that the companies plan to combine Sigma’s engineering and program management proficiency with MIL’s ammunition manufacturing capabilities and the sophisticated course-correction guidance technology to build robust domestic expertise in this critical segment.

The joint effort also intends to develop capabilities that will support the broader requirements of India’s defence establishment, including fulfilling supply commitments for ongoing key military projects. This aligns with India’s broader strategic objective to enhance indigenous defence production and reduce dependency on foreign imports, which has been a priority under various government initiatives in recent years.

India’s defence sector has increasingly focused on developing homegrown technologies and manufacturing capacities to strengthen national security and foster economic growth through defence exports. The collaboration between Sigma Advanced Systems and Munitions India is a reflection of this trend, emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships and technology sharing to accelerate the development of advanced weapon systems.

Overall, the joint venture is expected to contribute significantly to the modernization of India’s artillery capabilities. By integrating course-correction technology into artillery shells, the Indian military will be better equipped to execute precision strikes, aligning with global trends in military technology that prioritize accuracy, efficiency, and reduced collateral impact.
