Sensex and Nifty May Open Flat Amid Global Uncertainty and FPI Outflows
On October 13, 2026, Indian equity markets are anticipated to open on a flat to slightly positive note, despite persistent selling pressure from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and various global challenges. The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, have experienced recent declines amid inflationary concerns, geopolitical tensions, and mixed international market cues.
The Sensex closed at 71,924.68 points, down by 547.65 points, while the Nifty ended at 22,363.35, slipping 157.10 points. These movements come as investors remain cautious, reacting to rising inflation rates and uncertainty around global supply chains and energy prices.
Analysts suggest that volatility will continue, with selling pressure likely to emerge on any market uptick. The fast-rising inflation in India, which reached 5.54%, has increased concerns about the earnings outlook for key sectors such as fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and automobiles. This inflationary environment is expected to weigh on market sentiment in the near term.
Global market conditions have also contributed to the cautious mood. Asian indices opened lower, with Japan's Nikkei 225 falling over 2% and South Korea's KOSPI declining more than 4%. These declines are linked to weakness in the US semiconductor sector and broader technology stock sell-offs. As a result, regional markets have adopted a risk-averse stance.
Energy prices have added to the uncertainty. Brent crude oil rebounded to approximately $106.65 per barrel, fueled by concerns over the Russia-Ukraine conflict and renewed supply disruptions in the Middle East. These geopolitical risks have elevated the energy risk premium, putting additional pressure on inflation and, by extension, on equity markets.
Meanwhile, gold prices have softened. Spot gold dipped by 0.2% to $4,161.81 per ounce after reaching a one-week high in the previous session. The US dollar’s strength, near an 18-month peak, has made dollar-denominated metals more expensive for holders of other currencies, dampening demand. US gold futures for December delivery also declined slightly, reflecting subdued investor interest ahead of upcoming US inflation data.
Market experts are closely watching the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) release, scheduled for October 14, which could influence Federal Reserve policy decisions and global risk appetite. US Treasury yields remain elevated near 5.24%, contributing to higher borrowing costs and keeping inflation worries elevated.
Cryptocurrency markets have mirrored the cautious tone. Bitcoin has hovered around $82,249, showing consolidation below key short-term averages. Analysts indicate support zones between $81,800 and $82,000, with resistance near $82,800 to $83,100. Ethereum trades near $2,455, facing immediate support at $2,440 to $2,450. Institutional demand for crypto appears fragile, as evidenced by mixed ETF flows and macroeconomic uncertainties.
In the domestic corporate sector, significant quarterly earnings reports are expected this week, including from companies such as Tata Elxsi, ICICI Prudential Life, Hero Motors, BHEL, and HDFC Bank. These results may provide further direction to market sentiment, especially amid ongoing inflationary and geopolitical concerns.
On the corporate action front, Transport Corporation of India has announced a buyback of 1,562,500 equity shares at ₹960 each, with the buyback window open from October 15 to October 22, 2026. The total buyback amount will not exceed ₹150 crore. Additionally, Sandhar Technologies completed a strategic investment of INR 1.62 crore in Clean Renewable Energy HR 1B Private Limited, signaling continued interest in sustainable projects.
Overall, investors are advised to exercise caution and avoid chasing market rebounds aggressively. Key factors to monitor include domestic inflation trends, global crude oil prices, the US inflation report, and foreign investment flows. These elements will play a crucial role in shaping the market’s direction in the coming days.
