Gold prices weakened on Tuesday as the US dollar maintained its strength, prompting traders to closely monitor upcoming inflation reports from the United States for clues about the Federal Reserve's future interest rate decisions.

Spot gold dropped by 0.2 percent, settling at $4,164.45 per ounce by 0201 GMT, after reaching a one-week high the previous day. Meanwhile, US gold futures for December delivery declined slightly by 0.1 percent, trading at $4,187.90.

The US dollar remained near an 18-month peak reached in the prior session. This sustained strength in the dollar has made precious metals priced in US currency more expensive for investors using other currencies, thus putting downward pressure on gold.

Market participants are awaiting the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) set for Wednesday and the Producer Price Index (PPI) scheduled for Thursday. These reports are critical for assessing inflation trends and their potential influence on monetary policy.

Kyle Rodda, a senior financial market analyst at Capital.com, pointed out the importance of the upcoming CPI data for gold's short-term direction. "If inflation figures, especially the core measure excluding volatile food and energy prices, come in higher than expected and increase the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October, gold could face further declines," Rodda explained.

Typically, when interest rates rise, investors prefer assets that yield returns, such as bonds or savings instruments, over non-yielding assets like gold. Currently, traders assign a 21 percent probability to an interest rate increase by the Fed in October, but the odds jump to 88 percent for a hike in December, according to CME's FedWatch tool.

Adding to the rate hike discussion, Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack recently emphasized the need for a swift transition to tighter monetary policy. She noted that inflation has broadened and is beginning to impact how companies set prices, underscoring the urgency of controlling rising costs.

On the geopolitical front, tensions remain elevated in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia reported a fresh wave of incoming fire and announced that Riyadh's airport will remain closed temporarily. This follows a missile strike on a departure terminal last Saturday, which was claimed by Yemen's Houthis, an Iran-backed group. These developments could influence market sentiment, although their direct impact on gold prices has been limited so far.

In other precious metals, spot silver declined by 0.5 percent to $60.01 per ounce. Platinum prices fell by 0.2 percent, settling at $1,682.47, while palladium dropped 0.5 percent to $1,137.69.

Gold's movement in the coming days will largely hinge on inflation data outcomes and the Federal Reserve's response. As inflation indicators provide fresh insight into economic conditions, investors will weigh the balance between inflation risks and interest rate adjustments when making decisions about gold and related assets.
