Kolkata Durga Puja Stampede: PM Announces ₹2 Lakh Aid, Shah to Visit Injured

A tragic incident unfolded in Kolkata on Saturday evening when a stampede broke out at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and multiple injuries. The crowd surge reportedly began as rain started falling, causing panic among attendees waiting outside the pandal.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, expressed his deep sorrow over the calamity. In a message shared on social media platform X, he conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. Modi announced a compensation package from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, which includes ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for every person injured in the incident.

"The stampede in Kolkata is extremely distressing," Modi stated. "My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest." He also confirmed that local authorities are actively providing all necessary support to the victims and their families.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded swiftly to the tragedy, postponing his planned engagements in West Bengal scheduled for Sunday. Shah is set to personally visit the hospitals where the injured are being treated. In his message on X, he noted the gravity of the situation and relayed his prayers for the departed souls. He also offered his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.

Shah had been scheduled to visit several prominent Durga Puja sites, including Belur Math, Deshbandhu Club pandal in Howrah’s Bally area, Sovabazar Rajbari in north Kolkata, and the Sreebhumi Durga Puja pandal in Lake Town, eastern Kolkata. All these visits were canceled to prioritize attending to those affected by the stampede.

According to police reports, approximately 35 individuals were transported to hospitals following the stampede. The sudden onset of rain led to a rush among the crowd, which triggered the chaotic situation. Some people reportedly fell onto the roadway during the commotion, exacerbating the incident.

Durga Puja is a major cultural and religious festival celebrated with great fervor across West Bengal and other parts of India. Large crowds often gather at community pandals to witness the elaborate decorations, rituals, and performances dedicated to Goddess Durga. Due to the scale and popularity of these events, managing crowd safety becomes a critical concern for local authorities each year.

This unfortunate event underscores the challenges of ensuring public safety during mass gatherings, especially during significant festivals. Officials and organizers frequently work to implement safety protocols, but incidents like this highlight the need for continued vigilance and improved crowd management techniques.

The government’s quick announcement of financial aid aims to provide some relief to the victims’ families and those injured. The involvement of senior officials like the Prime Minister and Home Minister reflects the seriousness with which the administration is addressing the crisis.

As investigations into the cause of the stampede continue, authorities are expected to review safety measures at major public events to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of life and hopes for the swift recovery of those injured in this distressing incident.
