NTPC Expands Nuclear Feasibility Studies to New States Including UP
NTPC, the state-run power giant in India, is preparing to broaden its scope of nuclear power feasibility assessments by including additional states such as Uttar Pradesh. This move forms part of the company’s larger strategy to boost its non-fossil fuel energy generation capacity to at least 2 gigawatts (GW) by the year 2032.
The company, which has accumulated over 50 years of experience in power generation, aims to contribute significantly to India’s nuclear energy expansion by targeting 30 GW of nuclear power projects nationwide. This ambitious goal aligns with the Indian government’s plan to achieve a total nuclear capacity of 100 GW by 2047.
NTPC has already completed detailed feasibility studies in three states: Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. The results from these studies have identified specific locations deemed suitable for developing nuclear power facilities. In Bihar, the site selected is Banka, while Basai has been chosen in Madhya Pradesh, and Nabarangpur in Odisha. These sites were pinpointed after comprehensive evaluations of geological, environmental, and infrastructural factors that are crucial for nuclear project viability.
A senior official from NTPC shared these updates with PTI, emphasizing that the company is set to initiate similar exploratory studies in other states shortly. This expansion of feasibility assessments is critical for mapping out potential sites across India that can support the infrastructure and safety requirements needed for nuclear plants.
The push for nuclear energy by NTPC reflects a broader shift in India’s energy sector, where efforts are intensifying to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase investments in cleaner, sustainable energy sources. Nuclear power is seen as a key component in this transition due to its ability to generate large amounts of electricity with low greenhouse gas emissions.
India’s nuclear energy program has been steadily growing over the past decades, supported by domestic development and international partnerships. The government’s target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 is part of a more extensive vision to meet rising energy demands while addressing environmental concerns.
NTPC’s commitment to establishing 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 positions the company as a major player in this national effort. This focus on nuclear power complements its existing portfolio, which includes thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power generation.
The feasibility studies are essential first steps that involve assessing factors such as land availability, water resources, seismic activity, and proximity to power grids, among others. These assessments help ensure that future nuclear plants are developed safely and efficiently, minimizing risks to nearby communities and the environment.
As NTPC moves forward with its plans, the energy sector will be watching closely how these developments shape the future energy mix in India. The expansion of nuclear power capacity is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s goal of increasing clean energy sources and reducing carbon emissions.
By exploring new states for nuclear projects, NTPC is not only advancing its own strategic objectives but also supporting the broader national agenda of energy diversification and sustainable growth. The company’s approach reflects a careful balance of technical expertise, regulatory compliance, and long-term planning necessary for successful nuclear power deployment.
In summary, NTPC is actively expanding its feasibility studies for nuclear power plants beyond Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, now including states like Uttar Pradesh among others. Identifying viable sites such as Banka, Basai, and Nabarangpur marks progress toward its goal of developing 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047, contributing to India’s ambitious energy transition roadmap.
