NTPC Invites C&I Investors for 26% Stake in Co-generation Projects
NTPC Ltd, India’s leading power producer, has issued a call for Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from commercial and industrial (C&I) firms interested in acquiring a 26 percent equity share in its upcoming co-generation projects. This move aims to foster partnerships that will create energy solutions tailored to meet the steam and electricity needs of various industries.
Co-generation, or combined heat and power, refers to the simultaneous production of electrical power and useful thermal energy, such as heat or steam, from a single fuel source. This approach enhances overall energy efficiency by utilizing the fuel more effectively than separate heat and power generation. NTPC’s initiative targets the development of such integrated facilities, combining coal, renewable energy, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) to deliver comprehensive power supply packages for industrial users.
Industries have increasingly prioritized energy security, cost reduction, and sustainability in their operations. By partnering with NTPC on these co-generation projects, businesses can benefit from reliable and economical energy supplies while contributing to environmental goals. NTPC highlighted that this collaboration model is designed to address diverse industrial demands through long-term power and steam supply agreements.
This step also reflects NTPC’s broader strategy to diversify and expand its energy portfolio beyond conventional power generation. With expertise spanning thermal, hydro, solar, and wind energy, the company is exploring innovative delivery models that integrate multiple energy sources. These efforts align with India’s transition toward cleaner energy and greater efficiency in industrial power use.
As the country’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC currently operates over 91 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity, with an additional 35 GW under construction. The firm has set an ambitious goal of reaching 149 GW total capacity by 2032. Of this, 60 GW is expected to come from renewable resources such as solar and wind.
NTPC’s energy mix strategy includes maintaining a balance between thermal, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power plants to ensure steady, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply nationwide. Beyond power generation, the company has expanded into emerging sectors including electric mobility, energy storage, waste-to-energy projects, nuclear power development, and green hydrogen production.
By inviting C&I investors to join these co-generation projects, NTPC is opening opportunities for industries to participate in energy infrastructure development actively. This collaboration could enhance industrial competitiveness by optimizing energy costs while supporting India’s broader goals of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Overall, the initiative underscores NTPC’s commitment to innovation and partnership as key elements in shaping the future of India’s power sector. It offers a practical path for industries to secure both steam and electricity needs through integrated, sustainable solutions backed by a trusted power utility.
