JSW Group Plans ₹50,000 Crore Investment in West Bengal with CM Adhikari
JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal held a significant meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday to explore extensive investment opportunities within the state. The discussions covered a broad spectrum of sectors including power generation, power systems, port development, cement manufacturing, and steel production.
This was the first interaction between Jindal and Adhikari since the latter assumed office as the Chief Minister. The meeting took place at Nabanna, the administrative headquarters of West Bengal, in the evening. Jindal described the talks as "very good," indicating that a variety of topics were thoroughly examined.
JSW Group's proposed investments in West Bengal are projected to total around ₹50,000 crore. Jindal clarified that about ₹40,000 crore of this amount is earmarked for power-related projects, while the remaining ₹10,000 crore will be allocated to other sectors such as ports, cement, and steel. These plans underline the group's commitment to expanding its footprint in the eastern region of India.
Following the meeting, Chief Minister Adhikari revealed that Jindal has committed to performing the bhoomipujan, a traditional ground-breaking ceremony, for the second unit of JSW's power plant in the first week of January. This event marks a key milestone in the ongoing development of the group’s energy infrastructure in the state.
JSW Energy began work in April 2025 on a 1,600-megawatt (MW) power plant located in Salboni, within the Paschim Medinipur district. This project represents the largest greenfield power plant in JSW Energy's portfolio and is also the biggest thermal power project undertaken by the private sector in West Bengal. The investment for this power plant alone is estimated at ₹16,000 crore.
The foundation stone for the Salboni power project was laid by the previous Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. Alongside the power facility, JSW Group also initiated the JSW Industrial Park, designed to provide plug-and-play infrastructure to support industrial activities and attract further investment in the region.
The discussions between JSW Group and the West Bengal government reflect a broader trend of increased private sector participation in India’s infrastructure and energy sectors. As the country seeks to boost its power generation capacity and improve logistics and industrial output, investments like those planned by JSW are essential to meeting future demand.
JSW Group is a major Indian conglomerate with interests spanning steel, energy, infrastructure, and cement, among others. Its push into West Bengal aligns with the company’s strategy to diversify geographically and capitalize on the growth potential in eastern India, which is seen as a key economic corridor.
For West Bengal, attracting such substantial investments supports the state’s goal of industrial development and job creation. The improvements in power availability, port facilities, and manufacturing capacity are expected to enhance the state's economic competitiveness.
Looking ahead, the JSW Group’s commitment to invest ₹50,000 crore in West Bengal could have a lasting impact on the region’s industrial landscape, providing a foundation for sustained growth and development in multiple sectors.
