Delhi Extends Traffic Restrictions Sunday Amid Ongoing Protests
Delhi will continue to experience traffic limitations on Sunday as protests persist over the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Delhi Traffic Police announced that diversions will be in place at around 30 critical locations throughout the city starting from 6 am, contingent on the evolving situation.
The restrictions primarily affect central areas including Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, Mandi House, and Patel Chowk, among others. Authorities have cautioned commuters about potential delays and advised avoiding unnecessary travel, especially near transit hubs such as railway stations, inter-state bus terminals, and the airport routes passing through New Delhi and Central Delhi.
The measures come in response to renewed demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) alongside student groups like the Students' Federation of India (SFI). These groups have vowed to maintain a continuous presence at protest sites until their demand for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar is fulfilled.
At a press briefing held on Saturday at HKS Surjeet Bhawan, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde declared that daily marches heading toward Jantar Mantar would continue unabated until the chief election commissioner steps down. He also raised concerns about the treatment of detained protesters, including Abhijeet Dipke, alleging inhumane conditions imposed by the Delhi Police during custody.
Echoing this, SFI General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya explained that students intend to conduct peaceful demonstrations and would occupy areas where police barricades attempt to block their movement, turning these spots into focal points of protest activity.
The list of affected routes includes major junctions like the Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar Road roundabout, Tolstoy Marg-Janpath crossing, Jai Singh Road-Sansad Marg intersection, Rail Bhawan roundabout, Patel Chowk, Gol Dak Khana, and multiple crossings around Connaught Place. Additional congested points are expected at Mandi House, the Minto Road-Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg junction, Lodhi Road flyover, Neela Gumbad roundabout, Samrat Hotel roundabout, Sardar Patel Marg-Panchsheel Marg crossing, and underpasses beneath the Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyovers.
Authorities have committed to monitoring conditions closely and will adjust restrictions as needed based on real-time assessments. Travelers are encouraged to stay updated through official Delhi Traffic Police channels on their website and social media platforms.
Delhi’s traffic control efforts reflect the challenges cities face when balancing public protest rights with urban mobility. The ongoing demonstrations highlight civic engagement on electoral governance matters, while also emphasizing the impact such movements can have on daily commuters. Transport authorities typically respond with extensive planning and communication to mitigate disruptions during prolonged protests.
As the situation develops, residents and visitors are reminded to plan trips accordingly, stay informed of traffic advisories, and consider alternative routes or modes of transportation to navigate the city efficiently during this period of heightened political activity.
