Barclays to Cut 5,000 Jobs Amid AI Cost-Cutting Despite Q3 Profit Rise

Barclays has announced plans to eliminate approximately 5,000 positions, which amounts to about 5 percent of its global workforce, as part of a strategic move to reduce fixed costs by leveraging artificial intelligence technology. This decision comes despite the bank reporting a 12 percent increase in its third-quarter profits, reaching £2.3 billion ($3.08 billion) compared to the same period last year.

The job reductions highlight Barclays’ commitment to transforming its operations through technology, aiming to enhance efficiency and improve shareholder returns. The bank's CEO, C S Venkatakrishnan, acknowledged that while the profit figures show growth, they fell short of analysts’ expectations, largely due to underperformance in its fixed income trading division.

Venkatakrishnan expressed his disappointment with the results from this traditional strength area, attributing the weakness to a volatile trading environment, especially in rates and credit products. He assured stakeholders that this shortfall would be a key focus area moving forward.

In the third quarter, Barclays further intensified its cost-reduction efforts by implementing additional structural cost-saving measures, which amounted to £201 million. These actions are part of a broader, long-term strategy to lower expenses, notably those related to staff, by increasing reliance on automation and AI-driven processes.

Anna Cross, Barclays’ Chief Financial Officer, provided insight into how the job cuts will be distributed. She indicated that roughly 60 percent of the affected roles will be in support functions, including technology developers and other back-office staff. This distribution reveals how AI is reshaping banking operations, enabling firms to maintain or even improve service levels with fewer employees in certain areas.

Cross noted that about 1,000 positions have already been eliminated, with the remaining 4,000 expected to be cut before the end of the year. These workforce reductions reflect a growing trend within the financial sector, where banks are adopting AI and automation not only to cut costs but also to stay competitive amid evolving market demands.

Barclays’ efforts to integrate advanced technology come at a time when many global banks are reassessing their cost structures. The banking industry faces constant pressure to balance profitability with investment in innovation, compliance, and customer service. Artificial intelligence has emerged as a key tool in this balancing act, offering possibilities to streamline operations and reduce repetitive manual tasks.

The bank’s move to reduce staff through AI-driven efficiency gains fits into a wider narrative of digital transformation sweeping the financial services sector. Institutions worldwide are increasingly deploying machine learning, data analytics, and robotic process automation to optimize workflows and deliver faster, more personalized services to clients.

Despite the challenges in fixed income trading, Barclays’ overall financial results for the third quarter show resilience. The 12 percent profit increase underscores the institution’s ability to generate steady earnings amid changing market conditions. However, the bank’s cautious tone signals that adapting to technological shifts and volatile market segments remains a priority.

As Barclays trims its workforce and pivots toward AI-enhanced operations, the coming months will reveal how these changes impact its competitive position and long-term growth prospects. The bank’s experience may offer insights for other financial firms navigating similar pressures to innovate while controlling costs.
