Apple introduced its most costly iPhone to date with the unveiling of the iPhone Duo, a foldable device that starts at $1,999. Preorders opened on Friday, and initial stock for in-store pickup quickly sold out, while online deliveries are now pushed into late January. Apple described the preorder activity as "nothing short of extraordinary," emphasizing its commitment to fulfilling orders as swiftly as possible.

The iPhone Duo marks a significant departure in design, representing the first foldable iPhone and creating a new pricing tier above the established Pro and Pro Max models. The top-tier version with 2TB storage exceeds $3,000, underscoring Apple’s move into the ultra-premium smartphone segment.

This launch offers a window into the demand for foldable devices within Apple’s loyal customer base. Industry analysts suggest Apple’s strategy isn’t focused on foldables becoming mainstream immediately. Instead, it aims to capitalize on the spending power of a niche group of high-end users, turning the Duo into a status symbol and revenue driver.

According to research firm IDC, foldable phones will account for slightly over 2% of global smartphone shipments this year but nearly 7% of the market’s revenue. By 2030, foldables are expected to generate about 10% of industry revenue while comprising only around 3% of unit sales. This discrepancy between volume and value highlights the premium potential Apple is tapping into.

Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC, remarked to CNBC that the Duo is becoming an aspirational device within the foldable category, similar to Apple’s overall brand positioning. Though foldable technology has been available in Android devices for several years, Apple’s entry into this space taps into its vast installed base and ecosystem, bringing the form factor to millions of users.

Apple’s interest in foldable technology dates back over a decade. A patent application filed in 2011 by Apple engineers, including John Ternus who is now Apple’s CEO, shows the company’s long-term commitment to this design. As Popal noted, the innovation isn’t in the technology itself but in Apple applying it to its extensive customer network.

Some industry watchers anticipated a higher starting price for the Duo, possibly between $2,400 and $2,500. However, the $1,999 entry price suggests Apple intends to capture a significant share of the foldable market quickly. Analyst Anshel Sag from Moor Insights views the Duo as likely to become a prominent status symbol during the upcoming holiday season and beyond.

Supply constraints may add to the device’s exclusivity. Counterpoint Research estimates that around 6 million or fewer units will be available initially, a small fraction of Apple’s 1.4 billion iPhone user base. This limited availability could heighten demand and reinforce the Duo’s premium image.

Apple has previously ventured into luxury territory with products like the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition and partnerships with fashion brands such as Hermès. The Duo extends this premium positioning into Apple’s flagship product line, signaling a strategic move toward higher-end offerings.

IDC forecasts that Apple could ship approximately 7 million Duo units in 2026, representing about 3% of its total iPhone shipments. Expectations for 2027 are more optimistic, with a potential 70% increase in shipments that might capture 40% of the global foldable market and surpass competitors like Samsung and Huawei.

More than unit sales, the Duo’s impact on revenue is crucial. Analysts predict many buyers will be existing iPhone users upgrading from models like the Pro Max to the pricier Duo. Others may purchase the Duo as a secondary device, taking advantage of Apple’s ecosystem for smooth device integration. This migration could significantly raise Apple’s average selling price and boost overall revenue even with modest sales volumes.

JPMorgan echoes this view, anticipating the Duo will disproportionately influence iPhone revenue due to its premium pricing. The bank notes that iPhone shipment volumes are expected to stay relatively flat, making product mix and pricing the main growth drivers in the upcoming cycle.

D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria highlights the importance of the Duo for Apple as it faces tough year-over-year comparisons. He sees the device as a way to increase revenue by attracting high-end customers and pulling buyers from competing foldable Android models. Additionally, the Duo could stimulate interest that benefits sales of other iPhone models, as some customers might visit Apple stores to see the Duo but ultimately buy a less expensive iPhone.

Market data shows mixed signals for other iPhone models, with lead times for the iPhone 18 Pro easing in some markets while the Pro Max remains in higher demand. This dynamic increases pressure on the Duo to draw consumers toward Apple’s premium product tier.

The shift toward more expensive iPhones comes amid a challenging environment for the global smartphone market, where growth is slowing and consumers are holding onto devices longer. Analyst Wayne Lam from TechInsights points out that moving upmarket allows Apple to protect revenue from its flagship product as the smartphone approaches its 20th anniversary. With limited alternatives to expand market share, focusing on premium devices like the Duo offers a viable strategy to sustain earnings amid industry headwinds.
