SML Mahindra Stock Dips 4% Despite 18% Sales Growth in September

SML Mahindra's shares opened at ₹6,501 on the National Stock Exchange on Thursday, retreating from the previous closing price of ₹6,578 recorded on Wednesday. During intraday trading on 1 October, the stock hit a low of ₹6,300.05, marking a decline of over 4% despite the company announcing an 18% rise in sales for September 2026.

The company reported total vehicle sales of 1,124 units in September, up from 950 units in the same month last year. This growth was driven primarily by cargo vehicles, which posted a 39% year-on-year increase, reaching 516 units compared to 370 units in September 2025. Passenger vehicle sales also experienced a modest gain of 5%, rising to 608 units from 580 units.

For the half-year period from April to September 2026, SML Mahindra sold 9,340 units, reflecting a 15% increase over the 8,145 units sold during the corresponding period in the previous year. These figures highlight a steady upward trajectory in the company’s sales performance amid a challenging automotive market.

In a separate announcement, SML Mahindra disclosed that its board of directors will convene on 19 October 2026 to review and approve the unaudited financial results for the second quarter and half-year ending 30 September 2026. Investors and market watchers will be keenly following this meeting for further insights into the company’s financial health and strategic direction.

Despite the recent dip, the stock has displayed a robust performance over longer periods. Over the past week, the price slipped 3.56%, likely reflecting profit-taking or market consolidation after substantial gains. Still, the share price has surged 17.65% in the last month and climbed 55.63% since the start of the year. The stock has more than doubled over the past 12 months, delivering a 102.94% return. Its performance over three and five years is even more remarkable, with gains of 439.66% and 976.04%, respectively.

Market experts have shared their perspectives on the stock’s outlook. Mahesh M Ojha, Vice President of Research and Business Development at Kantilal Chhaganlal Securities, pointed out that the stock exhibits a favorable technical setup. He identified ₹6,180 as a critical stop-loss level for traders. Ojha noted that if the stock surpasses the immediate resistance at ₹6,460 and sustains that level, it could move higher towards ₹6,700 and potentially ₹6,825. Investors are advised to monitor price movements carefully while maintaining strict risk management.

Contrastingly, Nitant Darekar, a research analyst at Bonanza, urged caution due to the stock's premium valuation and potential risks linked to the company’s ambitious expansion and integration plans. Darekar highlighted the company's strong operational momentum, with FY26 revenue increasing 18% to ₹2,838 crore and profit after tax rising 31% to ₹160 crore. He also mentioned the significant ₹525-crore acquisition of Mahindra’s Truck and Bus Division, which may serve as a catalyst for re-rating by broadening SML Mahindra’s product lineup and market presence.

Darekar further emphasized the company’s foray into electric buses and its long-term revenue goals, which contribute to the optimistic growth narrative. These developments could position SML Mahindra favorably within the evolving commercial vehicle sector, especially as demand shifts towards greener transportation options.

SML Mahindra operates in a competitive automotive industry segment focused on commercial and passenger vehicles. The company’s blend of traditional offerings alongside emerging electric vehicle ventures reflects broader trends in the sector, where innovation and sustainability are gaining prominence.

Investors interested in SML Mahindra should weigh the recent sales growth and acquisition strategy against valuation levels and execution risks. The upcoming financial results announcement on 19 October will provide more clarity on the company’s trajectory.
