According to the company’s filing with the stock exchanges, Vishal Mega Mart reported a consolidated net profit of ₹157.9 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. This represented a 3.7 percent increase compared to ₹152.3 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Despite the profit growth, the company’s profit margin contracted to 4.6 percent during Q2FY27, down from 5.1 percent in the corresponding quarter of FY26.

The retailer’s revenue from operations rose by 14 percent year-on-year to ₹3,398.5 crore, up from ₹2,981.5 crore in Q2FY26. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) also increased by 4.2 percent to ₹412 crore. However, the EBITDA margin slipped to 12.1 percent, compared to 15.3 percent in the same period last year. Vishal Mega Mart attributed this margin compression primarily to operating deleverage caused by a shift in the timing of festive season sales, which moved from the first half of the year into the second half.

The company’s same store sales growth (SSSG) for the quarter stood at 7.7 percent. Vishal Mega Mart noted that this figure was impacted by the rescheduling of key festivals, which typically drive higher consumer spending. Adjusting for this seasonal shift, the firm estimated that the underlying SSSG would be closer to 9.5 percent.

Expansion continued during the quarter as Vishal Mega Mart added 53 gross new stores and 49 net stores, increasing its total footprint to 844 stores across 582 cities. The retail space covered approximately 1.41 crore square feet by the end of September 2026. The company also reported a loyal customer base of about 18.1 crore consumers, reflecting its strong presence in the budget retail market segment.

In a move to diversify its offerings and target a more urban, affluent demographic, Vishal Mega Mart launched a pilot store for its new apparel brand, ‘Belong & Co.’ This format focuses on providing contemporary fashion options that cater to younger consumers seeking effortless style.

Vishal Mega Mart operates in the value retail segment, which has been steadily growing in India due to increasing consumer demand for affordable products amid rising living costs. The company’s performance in Q2 highlights the challenges faced by retailers from shifting consumer behavior and seasonal sales patterns, especially in a market where festive seasons significantly influence quarterly earnings.

Industry analysts often observe that retail chains must carefully manage inventory and marketing strategies around festivals to optimize margins and maintain steady sales growth. Vishal Mega Mart’s results underline the importance of adjusting operational plans to align with changes in festive calendars and consumer spending habits.

Overall, the company’s ability to grow profit and revenues despite margin pressure signals resilience in a competitive retail landscape. Its expansion through new stores and entry into fashion segments indicates a strategic approach to broadening its market reach and enhancing customer engagement.
