Katie Zacharia Named White House Press Secretary by President Trump
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Katie Zacharia, a lawyer and conservative commentator affiliated with Trump Media & Technology Group, will take over as the White House press secretary starting Monday, Columbus Day. The announcement came through a post on Truth Social, the social media platform favored by Trump.
In his message, Trump said, "I am pleased to announce that Katie Zacharia will be beginning her term as Press Secretary tomorrow, Columbus Day, and will be doing an introductory News Conference on Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. from the Press Briefing Room in the White House." He added, "Katie has been with me, in spirit, from the very beginning, and will do a fantastic job!"
Zacharia will replace Karoline Leavitt, who departed the Trump administration in late August after taking maternity leave earlier this year following the birth of her second child. Leavitt is anticipated to start a role as an on-air contributor at Fox News next month.
According to Zacharia's LinkedIn profile, she has been serving as senior communications advisor for Trump Media since June. Trump Media & Technology Group owns Truth Social, which serves as the former president's primary online platform. Zacharia also holds the position of general counsel at Fix California, a conservative activist organization founded by Richard Grenell, who previously served as Trump's special presidential envoy for special missions and as head of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Earlier this year in March, Zacharia spent two months as a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, as indicated on her professional profile. This role added federal government communications experience to her career.
Her public appearances include numerous guest spots on Fox News political talk shows and other conservative media outlets, as reflected on her IMDb page.
The appointment comes at a time when the Trump administration is continuing to solidify its communications team amid ongoing political developments. The role of White House press secretary is pivotal in shaping the administration's messaging and managing relations with the media. Zacharia's close ties to the former president and her background in legal and communications roles within conservative circles suggest she will maintain alignment with Trump's messaging style and priorities.
Karoline Leavitt's transition out of the press secretary role followed her maternity leave, and her move to Fox News is part of a common pattern where former administration officials join media organizations as contributors. This shift highlights the revolving door between politics and media in Washington.
Trump Media & Technology Group, where Zacharia has been working, is a significant player in the conservative media landscape. It was established to create digital platforms that cater to conservative audiences, with Truth Social serving as its flagship product. The company aims to offer an alternative to mainstream social media networks, which Trump and his supporters have criticized for alleged censorship.
In summary, Katie Zacharia’s appointment reflects President Trump's preference for close allies with media experience in key communication roles. Her upcoming introductory news conference on Tuesday morning will be the first opportunity for the press to engage directly with the new press secretary in her official capacity.
