Facebook has rolled out new artificial intelligence-powered tools aimed at giving users greater influence over the content they see in their Feed and Reels. The platform now allows individuals to explicitly specify the types of posts and videos they want to encounter more or less frequently, shifting away from strictly relying on their past interactions and viewing habits.

The centerpiece of this update is a feature called Your algorithm. Accessible via the three-dot menu on any post, this section acts as a dedicated hub where users can add or manage topics to tailor their Facebook experience. Whether someone wants to watch more travel videos, catch up on technology news, or follow cooking tutorials, they can now communicate these preferences directly instead of passively depending on Facebook’s automated recommendation system.

In addition to topic management, Facebook has expanded the feedback options available on individual posts. Users can mark content as “Interested” or “Not interested” and may be prompted with follow-up questions to clarify their choices. They can also provide written descriptions about what they wish to see more or less of, offering nuanced feedback beyond simple clicks or likes. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, stated that the system updates recommendations in real time as users input their preferences, allowing for a more dynamic and responsive feed customization without delays.

Behind these new features are large language models (LLMs), a type of AI technology that interprets natural language instructions. Previously, Facebook’s ranking system depended heavily on analyzing signals such as likes, comments, shares, and watch time to predict relevant content. With LLMs integrated, the platform can understand user requests expressed in plain language, distinguishing subtle differences between similar content types. For example, if a user requests more smartphone reviews but fewer promotional videos, the AI can adjust recommendations accordingly.

This real-time adaptation within a user session marks a notable advancement. Instead of passively inferring interests from behavior, Facebook’s system can now respond promptly to explicit user input. However, the company clarified that while users have more control, they do not have absolute authority over every piece of content shown. The AI-powered ranking algorithms continue to play a significant role in deciding what appears in feeds alongside user preferences.

This development comes shortly after the launch of a comparable feature on Meta’s Threads app known as Dear Algo. Threads also allows users to influence recommendations by directly communicating their preferred content types. Both initiatives reflect a growing trend among social media platforms to incorporate more transparent and interactive ways for users to shape their online experience.

The shift toward explicit feedback mechanisms addresses longstanding challenges in recommendation systems, where algorithms sometimes struggle to accurately interpret user intent based solely on engagement data. By enabling users to articulate their content desires and dislikes clearly, platforms hope to reduce irrelevant or unwanted posts and enhance user satisfaction.

Meta’s introduction of these AI-driven controls signals an important evolution in social media personalization, balancing automated content curation with direct user guidance. As competition in the social networking sector intensifies, features like Your algorithm and Dear Algo may become standard tools for improving content relevance and user engagement.

Overall, these updates represent an effort by Facebook to put more power in the hands of users, helping them create a more tailored and enjoyable experience on the platform without sacrificing the efficiency of AI-powered recommendations.
