Tata Steel Unveils ₹9,067 Crore Expansion at Kalinganagar Plant
Tata Steel has officially commissioned a set of state-of-the-art manufacturing units at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha, coupled with the initiation of a major expansion project at Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL). Together, these developments represent a significant investment totaling approximately ₹9,067 crore, aimed at enhancing steel production capabilities and supporting regional industrial growth.
The newly operational facilities at Tata Steel Kalinganagar include two continuous galvanising lines (CGLs) with a combined capacity of one million tonnes per annum, designed to produce advanced coated steels tailored for the automotive and appliance sectors. These lines incorporate sophisticated coating technologies to ensure superior product quality and consistency.
Alongside the galvanising lines, a 0.9 million tonnes per annum continuous annealing line (CAL) has been brought online. This CAL ranks among the top three automotive steel lines globally, bolstering Tata Steel's ability to supply high-grade steel essential for modern vehicle manufacturing. The timing of these upgrades responds to rising demand for specialized steel products that deliver enhanced strength, safety, and performance.
Uttam Singh, Vice President of Operations at Tata Steel Kalinganagar, highlighted the strategic value of these investments. He stated, "These new facilities will expand our capacity to provide premium steel products, streamline operational efficiency, and reinforce our raw material supply chain." Singh also emphasized Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainable steelmaking practices, job creation, and contribution to Odisha’s industrial development, acknowledging government support in these endeavors.
A key component of the expansion is the launch of Phase I of a 7 million tonnes per annum slurry pipeline project. This pipeline will transport iron ore fines from Tata Steel’s Kalamang mines directly to the Kalinganagar plant through an underground system. This shift is expected to enhance the reliability of raw material supply, reduce reliance on conventional road and rail transport, alleviate logistical congestion, and lower emissions associated with transportation.
Supporting the plant’s continuous operations, Linde India Limited has commissioned a new air separation unit capable of producing 3,600 tonnes of oxygen, 1,940 tonnes of nitrogen, and 120 tonnes of argon daily via cryogenic distillation. This facility ensures a steady supply of gases critical for steelmaking and also maintains a reserve of oxygen for medical emergencies if needed.
Alongside these downstream upgrades, the NINL expansion project has commenced with a focus on modernizing equipment and enhancing production capabilities. The plans include installing a blast furnace fume extraction system and implementing zero effluent discharge protocols, reflecting Tata Steel’s emphasis on sustainability. NINL operates as a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, which has sanctioned a capital expenditure of ₹33,873 crore to increase crude steel capacity by 4.8 million tonnes per annum.
These projects align with Tata Steel’s broader objectives to advance technology-driven manufacturing, produce higher-value steel products, and pursue environmentally responsible operations. The company has set a target to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2045.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi formally inaugurated the new facilities and laid the foundation for upcoming expansions. He noted the importance of these initiatives in strengthening India’s steel manufacturing base, enhancing the output of specialized automotive steel, and improving raw material logistics. The projects are also expected to generate approximately 10,500 new direct and indirect jobs, supporting local economic development.
Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant is its second major integrated steelmaking facility in India and represents the largest greenfield project undertaken by the company at a single location. The plant’s growth has contributed to Tata Steel’s standalone turnover in India reaching over ₹1.39 trillion in fiscal year 2026, marking a 5 percent increase year on year.
In related developments, the National Steering Committee recently approved a ₹240.5 crore strategic investment plan for the Kataka Industrial Training Institute (ITI) cluster in Odisha. This initiative, developed in partnership with Tata Steel Foundation, aims to strengthen infrastructure, introduce modern training programs, and improve industry linkages to meet the region’s evolving skill demands. The Kataka cluster includes several government ITIs across Odisha, supporting workforce development aligned with industrial growth.
